Replaced injectors, now car won't run...
Hey guys, I just finished replacing all 6 injectors in mom's Maxima and everything went pretty smooth. (The UIM was a pain in the *** to remove, and the retaining screws for the injectors are made of butter, but all good).
I reconnected everything, went to start the car and it cranks and runs for a few seconds before dying off. It seems to be choking. I opened everything again and from what I can tell all connections are good and all the vacuum lines are closed. It seems as if it's not getting enough air rather than it being a fuel problem. Here's a video of 4 failed start-ups. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PrqkYthEMjY Any help would be greatly appreciated as I need to get this car back on the road ASAP. All injectors are brand new and spark plugs were changed 3 days prior to the injectors with NGK plugs. |
4 things to check-
1- Are you getting any codes? 2- Did you plug everything back in? 3- Are you getting any vacuum leaks? 4- Did you use new gaskets on the injectors? Did you force them in? Possible injector leakage. |
probably torn o'rings on the injectors.
Try to start the car with the accelerator pedal held ALL the way to the floor. If it starts even rough running, then you have too much fuel in the cylinders which is common to bad o'rings. |
The injectors came with new upper and lower o-rings. I'll try to floor it and see what happens. I tried to run it with constant acceleration and it would still stall, not WOT though. I'll let you all know. I would I check for vacuum leaks? All I did was check every vacuum line that I had disconnected to see if I had plugged it back in. Thanks for the help and patience guys

You need to get a vacuum gauge, most auto parts stores sell testers pretty cheap. Did you replace the upper IM gasket?
|
Sounds like it's back firing too. Are you s-u-r-e- everything is plugged in correctly?
|
New o-rings must be lubed with motor oil before installation so they don't snag on anything on the way in and seat properly. Did you do this?
|
Injectors came with a bottle of lube for the o-rings and i was pretty generous with it. I can stop by and get a vacuum gauge tomorrow, where do i hook it up and what am I looking for? I did not replace the UIM gasket as it looked fine. I will look into replacing it as well. Hopefully Nissan has one in stock at their dealer.
Yeah, i know the car is backfiring like crazy. The whole engine is shaking like crazy in the bay. As far as I know everything is connected appropriately. I will look at the gasket and vacuum gauge tomorrow and I will try to pop out the new injectors and pop back in by hand as I now was told that the method I used of pressing them down with the retaining head and screws does not pop them all the way in sometimes. |
Make sure you've got the MAF plugged in. I've forgotten it a couple of times.
If you can't find anything wrong with the engine diagnostics, the injectors may be stuck. Use the wiring diagram and a length of wire to connect a 9v battery across the wiring for each injector. (Keep the battery away from anywhere fuel vapors might hang out). On the car I did this with (not a maxima), I was able to connect at the ECU connector and the main engine fuse. When you connect and disconnect the battery, the injector should make a nice snappy click. If you don't hear a click, you can continue trying with the 9v battery or tap the top of the injector with something that won't damage it. This can often loosen a stuck injector. Take care that you may release enough fuel in this process to flood the engine, so you can crank with the throttle pedal down or just wait a half day for the fuel to drain from the cylinders. Dave |
The back firing tells me it's an ignition or firing (timing) issue. Not a miss.
Something is causing the engine to fire at the wrong time. |
1) MAF plugged in
2) MAP plugged in 3) Did you cross the connectors for the MAP and MAF sensor? They are the same.(thank you Nissan ) |

Ok guys, found the problem. Forgot to tie down a vacuum line behind the manifold. I know, freaking elementary, but I hadn't seen it until yesterday. New problem now! Car is puffing white smoke like crazy.
I got 3 codes. 0201 Ignition Signal Circuit 0304 Knock Sensor (not worried about this one) 0701 Multiple Cylinder Misfire. My first thought is to check the spark plugs tomorrow. They have less than 100 mi on them. NGK plugs. Anything else that could be causing this problem? |
At first I was like "white smoke, what the hell did/could this kid have done, white smoke is not good"
Than it hit me, I bet one of the coolant lines is going to a vacuum line and vice versa..... Worry about that first, but 0201 is probably a coil-pack not plugged in properly, I wouldn't worry about 0701. And if you had a cracked, melted, or otherwise bad KS (always measure resistance first) and you didn't replace it at the same time you are silly. |
I am just curious as to why you replaced all the injectors? I am thinking it is very expensive.

reommendation for some fail safe fuel injectors for 95 max
does anyone know where I can find some reliable fuel injectors this is the second one I have to replace.
