Transmission Leak help needed

Hey,

Long time no post on here guys (and girls) got a tough one for you, so recently my 1998 I30 has been leaking a good bit of transmission fluid, but very sporadically, I'll come out 9 out of 10 times and there will be nothing, then once out of ten, there will be like 1.5 to 2.5 quarts on the ground, seems i always park level, or near level, the dealer seems to be thinking the main trans seal (where the engine bolts in). Just checking here for other ideas... or cheaper fixes.

Anyone got any thoughts,
Thanks

are you sure about 1.5-2.5 quarts? That is a TON of fluid.

How about when it leaks you get under the car with a rag and clean every thing off and then when it decides to leak on you, you can get back under and see what area is dirty again.

Are you an auto or manual by the way?

Just a suggestion, if you ever decide to have your rear main seal replaced, make sure that you replace the torque converter cover seal also. I replaced the RMS on mine at the dealer. A year later, the torque converter access cover starts to leak... Searching in this forum, it is pretty common for the cover to leak. Why wouldn't the dealer replace the torque converter seal when they had the tranny dropped for the RMS. Go figure!

Feld, no time, and might be slightly off, but its a ton of fluid, makes a big big puddle. unfortunately right now i dont have the time to self investigate very much. and VLSD auto.

WXM, i think you mean the reverse of what you said, but good thought, thanks

i really can't think of a situation where it would not leak at all most of the time and then 10% of the time dump out half of your fluid. I hope someone else is smarter than i. Good luck and in the mean time make sure you keep your fluid topped off to prevent any further problems

Your best bet is definitely to at least get it on a lift to see if you can pinpoint the leak, if not then clean it up so you can catch it next time. No real other way to determine where it's coming from.
