Acc. belt tensioner MISSING?
My buddy's Maxima was squealing really badly on startup, so I told him he needed to tighten his belt. I get under the hood and the long brass bolt I need to tighten, shown here:
...isn't there! There's just a hole in the brass base plate below it.
Why isn't this there? What part does he need to buy to replace this?

It's very common for that peice to snap when you try to adjust it, and I've also seen the same thing, it rusted and broke on its own and fell out.
The bottom part of it behind the pulley should still be there, it's required to help space things out properly. You can buy an entire rod/nut combo from Nissan of course. (for some reason alot of times dealers will get confused and order the whole assembly with pulley and everything, which is way more than the $40'ish it should cost)
BUT, to get by, or just forever, you can push/pry down on that pulley with the nut cracked loose, than while you are pushing on it hard enough to tighten the belt to an acceptable amount have a second person tighten up the nut on the pulley. It will lock in place and the belt will be tight, basically that peice isn't 100% needed, just the bottom of it behind the pulley as a spacer (that one is still there), BUT it makes life ALOT easier.

also isnt that reversed... to tighten it you actually turn left, and to loosen it you turn right? Cant remember all I know is that I busted mine doing it the first time, because I didnt loosen the pulley bolt first, so remember to do that cause if you dont it cant move up or down for adjustment, and thats probably how it broke in the first place.
