Transmission dipstick won't stay in place

The tranny dipstick for my 95 max keeps popping up 1/2" or so. Every time I pushed it down, but it doesn't seem to want to stay in place. Other than that it is in good shape. I have been thinking to wrap a o-ring on top of tube so that it would snag in place, then I concerned the o-ring might accidentally drops into the tube... I know my Toyota SUV actually has a clip on the tube to hold the stick in place, but not sure where I can buy one. What do you guys do? Do I really need to buy a new dipstick?

AFAIK there's an o-ring around the top of the dipstick that helps keep it in place.

If you're not checking your fluid all that often, and you don't care about it looking 'ghetto', just electrical tape it.

Thanks. That explained it, and most likely the O-ring must have broken apart and dropped in. I will probably try to put another O-ring since I have some around. If that doesn't work, I will electric-tape it.

What if the breather tube is clogged and the pressure inside the transmission is pushing the dipstick out? If you tape the dipstick so it won't pop out, wouldn't the higher pressure cause seal damage? Does the dipstick have any resistant? Or very lose?

Does the pressure supposed to breath out from dipstick tube? Isn't the tranny supposed to be a sealed system? I see my Toyota having locking clip to keep the stick locked in place, assume it is meant to be sealed. Anyway, mine seems has almost non-resistant which makes me believe there was an O-ring there, so I put one there the past weekend, and have not get chance to confirm the effectiveness.

Maybe it was just a loose dipstick. My transmission dipstick has a resistant similar to pulling 2 - 4 lbs.
