HELP, what's the best way to take off a dash kit
Just want to know what's the best way to take an old dash trim of my car. I have carbon fiber, but got tired of it so ordered a wood one. My buddy want's to buy my old one. So what would be the best way to take it off without demaging it. Please let me know.

Why do you say that, can't I use some sort of glue to put it on my buddies car, or is it going to crack when I take it off.

I think you will ruin it taking it off. not to mention there will be a bunch of foam and crap stuck to all the parts of your car that you put it on.
Honestly I think your best bet is to swap parts with your friend, give him your climate control and vents and window switches and everything and have him give you his, that way you don't ruin the parts. |
Yep..the only way is to switch the actual dash
pieces. There is no way you can keep all the dash kits intact. Even if you don't break them, they will all get funky creases. I should have taken some pictures of my old dash pieces after I took them off.

Re: Yep..the only way is to switch the actual dash
hard to accomplish

This is soooo untrue. I took my dash kit off without any problems. First use a heat gun, not a hair dryer. When the pieces are soft just pull gently. It will leave the foam behind, this you will need to sand off or peel off (time consuming). Either way, you can use new 3M foam tape or super-glue to put it in the new car. I have taken off 3 dash kits this way and have had no problems. Take you time. Anything that can be put on can be taken off!
Good luck, Erik |
Wow, great timing since I was planning to remove my dash kit too. My question is, if I don't care about careful removal, will a hair dryer work as well? I don't have a heat gun available to me anywhere....

use heat gun to take off the piece then use goo gone to take off the foam

I took the dash trim off today. I used the hair drier which worked pretty good. The only thing is that I had glue left on the dash which came off later one. Dash trim looks ok, not too bad.

Is it possible to re-apply wood dash trim that is coming apart? I recently purchased a 97 SE that has a wood dash kit. The kit is coming up in two places (center vent & right above climate control area).

i'm also interested in taking mine off. If i plan to put a new trim on, does it matter if i take off the foam left over since it will be covered anyway by the new dash kit?
