rpm's going up and down?

hi
i have a 96 gxe and i just replace the maf cause it had a crack with a hole and the rpms whent down they where at 900 rpm so after that, they whent down to 500 but after driving it, i get to a stop sign and they go back up to 800-900 rpm does someone knows what is wrong with it cause the rpms at that high will cause to burn too much gas ?

my car does that at times.. i remember someone saying that there's nothing wrong with your idle rpms being at different places at different times but it's not a bad idea to look into it anyway.

so you think that the old maf that was cracked was the cause of burning too much gas ?

the only symptoms i heard of from a bad maf is rpms not being able to exceed 2.5k.. the burning of too much gas can be a lot of other things, i'd rather let a more experienced person list somethings you can check out.

but you can for sure start with changing the fuel filters and checkin out your alternator.

Have u or a mechanic ever adjusted either the accelerator cable or IACV adjustment screw. If so, now that u have the new MAF, Put the adjustment back.

If the car isnt buckling or any other driveablity issues, then u can adjust the IACV screw by yurself. Its a green / Teal screw near the TB. Adjus it so that the idle is around 600 RPMs.

Is the MAF new or used? If used, buy some MAF cleaner and spray the wire element inside it generously. DONT TOUCH THE INSIDE WIRES. jus spray the wire element and let air dry. If u havent done so, Clean TB as best u can. Jus get some carb cleaner and a rag and a hanger or stick or whateva and clean as far in there as u can. U wd be surprised how nasty it is inside the TB. DOnt remove unless u have a gasket ready or at least some RTV Sealant.

After the cleaning and adjustment, throw some Chevron Techron (commercial plug hehe :D) in the tank. Get back to us if anymore issues.

Here's a link to the FSM - it'll answer lots of questions. For a 'picture', you'll have to search the forums. I'm sure there's one somewhere.

change to 1996 for accurate details, but the idle adj screw s/b the same
