'97 Maxima - Oil Leak, Smoking Engine, Misfire
Hey all,
I have a '97 GLE with ~217,000 on the clock. The engine's had an oil leak for a bit, and when I stop driving some smoke comes out from under the hood. It smells like burning oil - therefore, I assume it is a result of the leak. The car also has a misfire - a few of the coils have been replaced, the PCV, TPS and CPS have all been replaced as well. The misfire has only been a very minor one, with no major hindrances in performance. CEL is on.
Today, though, things got interesting. When I parked after getting back to my dorm from a short trip out, the engine was running VERY rough, and the smoke was more present. Now, I am not certain that the misfire and oil leak are independent issues, but I am not certain they AREN'T either.
Maxima.org, I ask of you - what can I do?

Well I can assist with the oil leak.
Most likely it's originating from your rear valve cover which then drips down onto the exhaust area (which is very hot) thus creating smoke. If you plan on doing the repairs yourself there s quite a bit of info on here already to help you do the job. It took me 5 or 6 hours the first time, which most people would say is pretty slow. But I've done it enough times now to get it done in under an hour, so if you are stuck, lemme know.
