My 99.... Immobilized!!

Just ranting, tomorrow is going to be an expensive day...

If only this car wasn't red, I'd sell it in a heartbeat....

//edit for those people who find this thread in the future.

It was raining, I'm sure my key got wet, went to start my car, noticed it wasn't turning over, after some quick checks, viola big red light staying on laughing at me... what does that mean you ask? Well if you're key is in the on position and the red light is staying on, mocking you... then your car has been... IMMOBILIZED *DUN DUN DUNNN*

I've tried acting smart by disconnecting the battery but I doubt that'll work.... I'll also do the 5 in/out trick for programming fobs... doubt that'll work... before I goto the dealership tomorrow.

ChrisMan287 01-04-2011 10:35 PM

Gimme y0 exhaust before you sell it :hide:

aackshun 01-04-2011 10:48 PM

^ You won't know what to do w/ 190 uncorrected whp.

Just kidding, I love this car, it's ****ing red for pete's sake.

Times like this I feel like wayne brady has to do what he has to do...

why the dealer? Most locksmiths can reprogram NATS? I paid 40 to have two key reprogrammed by a local locksmith.

tigersharkdude 01-05-2011 06:11 AM

not your key getting wet. No way. When ever I go swimming I take my key off my key ring and tie it to my trunks. Its been fully submerged many times

Interesting... I will be making some calls today. How would it help me in my situation though? If my key has failed then how can they copy it? Or what if NATS is just flat out gone nuts?

Well, I have no other idea why the sudden lockout then.

There probably is no explainable reason. I had the same exact thing happen to me 2 years ago; I was at a movie and after I left the theater, the car wouldn't start, it just cranked and cranked at which point I noticed the security light on.

Long story short, I had to get my car towed to Nissan and paid $110 for them to re-program the NATS system. I hate to break it to you but you might have to get your car towed to Nissan, unless you know a tech who can borrow a consult overnight :P

Good luck, I remember how pissed off I was when it happened to me. The guys at Nissan didn't even care and had no problem billing me a full hour of labor for a job that took all of 3 minutes to do.

DennisMik 01-05-2011 09:57 AM

There is an A1 Locksmith by me that can do that and they make house calls. A1 is a nation chain (Ithink it is a franchise operation), so maybe there is one by you that can help you.

That's what I think is my best approach (going to nissan), after many calls today, i did find out many people can copy our keys, the best price I found was $65.

My car is only 7.1 miles away from champion nissan, which quoted me $85 for a consult scan (WHAT RIP OFF, but I guess they have to make their money back on that thing somehow) and if they find a problem w/ nats my $85 will be applied towards a re-program which was $110. As for towing, I think I'll do the ol' AAA scam and have three friends w/ me who have AAA and get our free 3 miles in from each of our memberships.

They wanted $150, they can blow me, one other locksmith managed to muster up the courage to tell me he wanted $210 for a copy, and would only back down to $185.

Daniel1120 01-05-2011 07:35 PM

aackshun, wtf are you thinking? If you have friends with AAA use them, and ask that a LOCKSMITH be sent out. If their a AAA baisc member it covers $60 work, plus is $100 and premier is $150. AAA Covers automotive locksmith work, the person you talk to at AAA might be a dumbass, but it will work. How do I know you ask? Well im glad you asked. I used to be a locksmith. And we were contractors for AAA. I once had a job where someone had the exact same problem, their keys transponder went out. So I went out there, copied their key onto a new transponder key and reprogrammed it with our TKO machine. Easy. Only charged them $60, which AAA covered all of. For the sake of making it easier, just tell the AAA rep that you lost the key all together and tell them to have the locksmith call you immeadiately. Then explain it to him, AAA reps are dumbasses. You might pay a little out of pocket, might not. Definitely you best bet. And locksmiths are 24 hrs... You could have your car running again in about an hour.... for free... seriously.

Yup AAA are dumasses.... I tried explaining the key situation earlier today, didn't go over so well.

I'm calling them now.

Daniel1120 01-05-2011 08:07 PM

Just tell them you lost it all together, and have the locksmith call you before he goes out there. Once you get ahold of him its all good. Hopefully he doesnt rape you on the price :hide: I know I did once or twice...

$134.xx - 60 = >$90, works for me... We'll see what happens tomorrow morning when he comes out there...

CMax03 01-05-2011 11:38 PM

Good luck, hope it's the key and not the ignition key module!

Thanks! And it wasn't!

And mad props to Daniel1120, you saved me like $100. The total was like $112.xx, came out w/ 3 keys, 1 that starts the car and 2 that open doors/trunks now.

To the 99 owners out there on this board this is definitely a pretty slick solution, I did not know other people could work w/ our Consult port and just be in and out in under an hour.

Now the magic question... WHY DID THIS HAPPEN? Oh well... If I get 12 years of use out of this key, I guess I won't complain.

So you payed less than $60? Thats still kinda raping you... but compared to the dealer its ALOT better. Glad I could help. If you were in the dfw area I could get my old coworker buddy to do it and only charge $60 to AAA and 0 to you. Glad you got it going again.

Actually no, I called around quite a few places, and that price of like $170ish is the norm, Nissan wanted 90 for the Key and 110 for the copying, out of the 10+ locksmiths I called, only 2 were out of the norm, one wanted 200+ like I mentioned before, and one wanted $65, but the shop was nowhere near my car it was near my job, I will be going to that $65 place to have a copy made though.

I'd say, have a copy made, maybe my key went bad, or the car got alzhiemers, I'll never know, but I do know I am having a copy made whenever I acquire the funds again...

ineedamaxima 01-08-2011 04:03 AM

Now that you have a working key, getting copies is much easier and cheaper.

I got 4 keys off of ebay at $9 a pop and my dealer programmed them all for $47.50

It sure is nice not to worry about having only one key!

najee1062 01-08-2011 09:28 PM

This does make me nervous cause I only have one key... But I'm looking into installing this totally keyless entry/start smart system... tell me what you guys think

I have the security light on and the car cranks but wouldn't start. Does it mean keys have to be reprogrammed?

I checked with a couple of locksmiths but everybody quoted $110+. I saw someone mentioning dealer charged $110. Is it better to have it(I could use AAA for towing) done at dealer shop?

Got it reprogrammed from a local locksmith today. Charged $145 since it was Sunday otherwise he was charging $110. Hope to get $60 reimbursed from AAA.

VQ'rInWLA 05-21-2011 07:29 PM

Holy jeezus im starting to feel bad for all you cats that have 99's with NATS.
Seems like there's no way out of the situation without paying at least 100 bucks.
And in the meantime you're standing there Stranded !

aackshun 05-22-2011 02:34 PM

The cost of having mad jdm tyte carz y0.....

VQ'rInWLA 05-22-2011 02:50 PM

Yeah luckily I was at the house when it acted up. It was a trip though. I took the whip to a coin op car wash at around 6am yesterday to get it ready for a big event. Had my keys in my pocket (bball shorts) and did notice it get semi wet but not that bad. As soon as I wrapped up, got in and drove home. After showering and getting ready, as I was about to leave (7ish am same day), I turned the car over and it idled for 2 secs and cutoff. Turned again, started, but cutoff right away even after applying gas since I thought it was my IACV issue with cold starts. Next crank, and thats all it did....crank. Immediately thought immobilizer. Look down and see the notorious red light of death :rotz:. Well thats behind me now. Will be using my AAA for this. They cover $100 so $40 outta pocket. $120 total but I tipped him $20 for being so quick.

VQ'rInWLA 06-12-2011 08:58 AM

BULLSIHT!!!! :danny:

FCUKIN CAR IS IMMOBILIZED AGAIN!!!! Tried both keys and got the red light both times. Already called the same locksmith to come out but I know all it is is a bandaid for the issue. Need to get in there and handle the issue directly.

Anyone have an idea as to what to do? Change out the immobilizer unit??

96 ecu swap, thats what i'm doing.

VQ'rInWLA 06-12-2011 10:00 AM

Isnt the ecu and the immobilizer two seperate units? Swapping ecus on a 99 wont do siht.

Tried looking through the Chilton for location of the unit but it doesnt have anything on the immobilizer....

Correct, but how will the fuel get cut when the ECU is not going to listen to what the NATS says?
