Amber corners?

Did some searching and seems like everyone used krylon stained glass yellow paint to make the corners amber. Is there any other way?
I have been to home depot, menards, hobby lobby, michaels and I can't for the life of me find ANY stained glass paint.
The jdm spray would be nice, but I don't want to spend $30+ on a bottle of spray paint.

Also there was no clear way, do you paint the inside or outside of the light.

I painted mine years ago, probably the 1st one here to do it. Michaels has it here, but ask for help on finding it in their store. Check other crafts or hobby stores in your area. Testors may have a yellow, they have candy apple red for the tails.

You can paint either side but they have their pros and cons. Inside is a ***** to do; it should last longer but will not cover the whole lense. From the outside its easy but can chip and fade.

as for online its all over the place.

Well I can scratch this off my list. Almost done. After HOURS of searching and going to every local store, nobody had any krylon stained glass paint. Matter of fact nobody had any stained glass paint unless it was clear and frosted. Didn't want to order online because I'm impatient and wanted to get something done today.
So I finally found a thread where someone used a dupicolor metalcast paint and said it was sold at oreilly's. (autozone doesn't have it)
So I went there on the way home from work. Little pricey it was $8 for the can and the kid said I can't return it if I spray it. So I figured ok I'll try it, if not $8 big deal.
I was very hesitant to buy it because the cap color made it look gold. I saw another can that looked more amber, but someone has said this work so I stuck with it.

Make sure the can you get looks like this

First took the lights off, 1 screw and pull. Big deal.
So this is what you need. Tape. I had painters tape so and it works well. Rubbing alcohol. Wipe the corner off with water and a paper towel. Then use the rubbing alcohol. Then I went back to some water and dry it off. This whole thing should take you 2-3 minutes per light.

Tape it off and cover all the black rubber. Take your time, it should take almost 10 minutes EACH light. Painters tape worked well because it's thin and you can kind of slide it in between the light and rubber.

Now make sure you do light coats. After a coat or two it will look like someone pissed on it. Very yellowish. The more coats the more orange it looks.
Make sure you do light even coats. I went up/down then side to side and kept switching back and forth to make sure you cover all angles. The light on the left has about 20-25 coats. The light on the right has about 15 coats.

As it dries it gets lighter, from what I have noticed.
I'll update more when it drys and they are on the car.

That Metalcast paint doesn't look too orange to me..

i bought mine from here http://www.ehobbies.com/ . Mine were painted on the outside in many small coats as the paint starts out yellow.

Don't look to bad, interested in seeing the finished product.

What seems like 40 coats later

Now the one on the right took a lot more coats because I made the first pretty heavy. The lighter coats you do the less you have to do. Not sure how it makes sense, but it does.

LOOKS! AWESOME!

I never knew Duplicolor made a paint that is opaque.

PhatboyNYC 01-16-2011 10:55 PM

those came out great! does the paint affect the light output significantly?

Stagnet04 01-16-2011 11:00 PM

they look really good, cant wait to see them on the car....

Honestly I have no idea since the lights never worked in the first place lol

PhatboyNYC 01-16-2011 11:17 PM

your corner lights don't work? oh man...lol

referencing your other thread, that would've been a red flag for me when looking to buy a car - when basic electronics/lights don't work.

Gamble 01-16-2011 11:21 PM

Honestly I thought they just turned on with the turn signals until I saw another maxima on the road. While pulling the lights out today one of them was unplugged. And I assume the other one has a burnt out bulb. A $2 set of bulbs is no big deal.

Gamble 01-17-2011 11:54 AM

Ok so the one side lit up when I plugged it in, the other was missing a bulb. Easy fix.

Few things to note that are important. I got a little impatient and didn't want to wait so I started to do some heavier coats. Bad idea as I got a run. I'll wet sand it as soon as I can find some 1200 grit sandpaper.
The driver side I didn't notice until I put it in the tab on the end of it is broke so it doesn't sit flush. It was always sitting like that.
The driver side was a tight fit, very tight. The headlight was in the way. So I pushed it out of the way and it popped off. WTF. And the grill has always been broke but now I see it was holding the headlight in place. So I'll take a look at it later today.
All in all the car has 200k miles almost so it's not perfect by any means. As long as the lights work and I don't have noticable runs in the lights I don't care for the most part.
Let me know what you think. I think I may spray the bottom lights to make them match a little better. Also some led bulbs in the corners wouldn't hurt.

why do you want orange corners??? i mean, i have the dark 97-99 cornered ones which i matched my retro's to. if your just messin around cause its a beater, thats one thing. get some eagle eye clears at least so it'll look somewhat uniform.

Gamble 01-17-2011 02:03 PM

Eagle eye clears? I don't like the clear look, orange is better.

ChrisMan287 01-17-2011 02:15 PM

Meh I'm not a fan of orange at all but that looks good. Matches pretty well.

ProW649 01-17-2011 02:27 PM

it looked nice with the lighter coats

lol, i guess if you've never replaced the headlights then you would'nt know what they are. they're front healights, not corners, and you can do em for 60 bucks a set on ebay. thats what my retro's are in.

Gamble 01-17-2011 05:41 PM

Thanks, got those off amazon for 58 shipped.

Gamble 01-17-2011 06:49 PM

Lit up. Would look better with amber bulbs but these do just fine for me.

I can also vouch for the eagle eyes clear headlights, 97-99 style they look great, look stock and are 60 bucks shipped for both. You cant beat that price.
