Off the line: S/C'ed auto vs. 5spd

A '95 Auto SE (me) vs. friends '95 SE 5spd. Let's say I supercharged with a V1. I would easily take him off the line and throughout right ? Somewhere I heard 5spds could still take auto's off the line even tho they were s/c'ed  That seems farfetch'd.

It could be correct...I heard S/C add no torque.

Of course they add torque, just not like NOS does. I would still imagine all that forced air would still propel an auto off the line faster than a 5spd N/A !?

Where is Y2kevSE when you need him :hmmph:

I bet a 5-speed would win off the line

The vortech supercharger is peaky just like a turbo, anyone with one or has ridden in one can tell you that. So, technically a supercharger is building no boost at idle, therefore it can get off the line no faster than a n/a auto maxima. The 5-speed would still take the auto off the line, but not for long unless the 5-speed is heavily modded.

About how long or what MPH would the supercharger start kickin in ? :lickout: Possibly 10mph ?:D

Also, even though it wouldn't help you off the line, you definatally would be able to hear the whine of it off the line correct ?

Correct. Tonight I raced a early model 300zx non-turbo 5spd and he got me off the line. We did a 20mph rolling race, I did the 3 honk thing, and he still got the jump on me. Once the boost build up, I just destroyed him. I would think in any case, a 5spd would still get a jump out on automatics. However, if you get a high stall converter, then it even things up.

Cumalot I was hopin' you would reply. Questions fellas:

1) Even a cold air intake helps off the line a little, are you tellin' me a supercharger wont do anymore if even that !?

2)Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!! Would you hear the whine off the line ??

I rode in justin gadlage's max with the stock pulley, and the boost didn't start building until 3500 rpm. From there on it felt really strong, but below that it feels about like mine.

:( Damn, I always thought I could squeel my tires and have jolting power off the line with a supercharger. :( :(

Like cumalot said, get a high stall torque converter, and you will have serious traction problems off the line, unless of course you can get your tires to hook up.

Wouldn't I need to upgrade my VB if I got one of those ?

Sure, the SC should help in launching off the line better. If you go against someone who really know how to drive their 5spd, he should able to get you off the line no matter what. Unless you have a high stall torque converter like I mentioned. Another thing is launching with a SC isn't an easy task. If you stomp on it too hard, all you'll get is wheel spin. Unless you have the help of a LSD. I'm back on my stock wheels and tires, so you can forget about any kind of grip.

You can't really hear the whine on my SC because it's a V2 SQ(super quiet). If you have the V1, that's a different story. You can hear that sucker coming.

Most definitely. I recommend you get that first. The VB gives you firmer shifts plus it prolong your tranny. Also, you'll need a tranny cooler too.

Woohoo ! Cumalot is the man!

Cumalot, my man!! :lickout: This is exactly what happened in my friends 01 lightning:

When I mashed the gas too far that thing spun like mad and it was whinin and swingin everwhere! I felt it was the supercharger, and to your confirmation it is. That's what I want in my max. Call me crazy but I crave all that.

If you've ever heard a '01 Lightning, you know they have a huge whine. Hopefully thats what a V1 is like. :)

So in closing a Supercharger really does add serious power to your wheels off the line, or else they wouldn't spin like mad, am i right?

Lightnings are beasts!

I get a lot of wheel spin especially on the stock tires. Even when I'm in gear. When I raced the guy in a 20mph roll, when I stomp on it, I still got major wheel spin. The guy and their friends were like, "holy crap, how did you spin your tires when you're in gear?!" lol...newbies. :)

Yes...yes they are. And everywhere we go all the attention goes to him and away from the Max. :( Random people at stoplights even ask him about it. Jealousy is a biyatch!

yuh
sounds like my friends Grand National.. I am not exactly sure what he did to it so far, but I know he raised the boost.. It is frightening, he can barely drive in the rain! You can cruising at 35 and mash the pedal, the tires would spin crazy. He's trashing modded mustangs and Camaros left and right. Boost is a wonderful thing :D

phatmax95 Dec 23, 2001 11:59 PM

i can spin my tires like crazy without the supercharger. try pullin the e-brake up to help you get started if you want.

two things

now that I converted to 5spd hehe, at 15-20mph in gear, if I hit the gas (leave in gear, dont touch the clutch) I can spin free...

I have a friend with a viper, 800hp including 200shot NOS... he has done a TON to it (subs, body kit, endless performance stuff, etc).. he can hit the gas on the interstate and light up his tires, and they are 50% wider then mine haha.... that thing is a hoss,

That's sweet that you can spin those tires while in gear! You make me want to follow your footsteps in that conversion everytime I talk to you...

Thats why I looked for so long before finding my max. I knew I would hate getting an auto and want to convert eventually.
