Can't get axle out...

I'm replacing my front right (passenger) axle. I got the knuckle off easily enough, but I just...can't...get...the axle to come out. I've tried prying with my Mother of All Screwdrivers, but there really isn't a lot of good leverage down there. I'm prying against the small lip inboard of the inner boot, so it's a deccent pry point. I've got some room to whack on the handle of the screwdriver with a rubber mallet, but it doesn't help. I've tried yanking on the axle itself (between the boots) too. There's about an inch of give, and then it feels like I'l pulling on the whole axle, but that isn't doing the job.

I've already spent an hour on this part alone. Anyone have any suggestions on how to get this thing out??

Did you remove the three bolts on the carrier bearing bracket?

DBear Oct 22, 2011 12:29 PM

No, since I don't even know what that is.

BTW, it's an AT.

Well f*** me for being an idiot. I see it now. I thought that was part of the axle assembly, but I see where it comes off. I'll try that. Thanks.

take the three bolts off that connects the carrier to the axle. if you still ant get it out take out the three bolts that hold the carrier to the car. its a b**** to get them apart due to corrosion and old age

Thats why I always put grease on the mating surface where the carries bearing slides through.

I can't even get in there to get any leverage on the bolts. It shames me to say it, but I think I'm going to have to punt on this one.

Air chizzle did it for me too...so much that I only have 2 bolt holes instead of 3. Glad you got it though. !

yeah it was all going smooth like 20 min in i had all three bolts out of the carrier bearing but hrs later i still couldnt budge the axle. so i finally called my bro to bring me a bigger compressor and the ingrosol rand air chisel!

op if you have airtools i strongly suggest investing in a good air chisel

I think doing it by hand would work too, big chisel + Big hammer + hammering Muscles.
