Ball Joint Bad?

Went and had 2 front tires installed. The guy tells me I have a bad drivers side ball joint. went home jacked up the car and and there is no loose movement when I move the tire up and down or back and forth. Think they were trying to sell me something I didn't need? Is there another way to check? Car seems to drive good although It feels like it pulls to the right.

ball joint boot cracked?? does the car shake even the slightest when driving?? is it the original balljoint??

JEFF6898 12-10-2011 10:47 AM

Has a slight vibration and bad pull to right unsure if cracked and as far as I know it is the original ball joint.

the ball joint would be leaking and the free play would be felt in the camber. you should be able to hear a knock and the vibration will be worst when you turn the car in the opposite direction of the bad ball joint.

When will you hear a knock under what condition

Is there a DIY on how to replace these? Just the ball joints, most people tell me to do the whole arm. But $150 VS 20-30$ is a big deal to me.

Sometimes you wont get play from moving the wheel up and down like, sometimes you have to stick a pry bar in there and give it pressure where it needs it to see and feel the play..

CMax03 01-01-2012 02:58 AM

Hit a bump and see if there a rapid vertical vibration or place a prybar, 2x4 under the front wheels while jacked up, work the wheel up and down 12 o' clock to 6 o'clock and feel the balljoint for play..... tierods are a lateral movement if you shake the wheel from 3 to 9 o'clock....and feel your outer and inner tierods for play!

Need help with aftermarket ball joint installation . I cannot put it back in all the way with a bjoint press. What are my options?

svezarov 01-18-2012 12:07 PM

I have had this issue before. Had to use dremel rotary tool to enlarge the whole (in this case in the control arm). After some dremeling it went in.

Another trick - put new ball joint in freezer overnight. It will shrink slightly and may slip in easier. Worked well on my Explorer.

The two things that these guys always try to sell me and everybody is - ball joints and sway bar links.

If you can't feel or hear that the ball joint is bad and you checked it out yourself then it's probably fine.
