speedometer dosen't work good ??

I have a 97' Maxima SE, auto. 97k miles.
last week, while I pulled the car out the parking lot in the morning, I found the speedometer didn't work--always stay on zero.
after the tranny shifted to the 3rd gear, the it come to normal.. jump to 30mph.
it happened few times like this last week..

anyone had seen this on your Maxima? what happen to my car?
please give me an idea..

Thanks

its either the connection in the back of your speedometer, or your VSS as a whole, OR its your cluster. mine is the VSS, but when i ordered it they sent me the wrong one. and i never got around to ordering the correct part lol. i have a gps that tells me the speed im traveling so i dont really care.

Unscrew the bolt of your speed sensor, it is on the back of your transmission and make a visual inspect for any damage, if so replaced it..

Start from there, inspect the harness, check for continuity..

tap on the guage when its acting up, i ruled out grounds and sender wires when i noticed the taps caused fluctuations. i ended up replacing all my guages one by one. pretty simple procedure.
