wife totalled the max today...

I've only had it a two months and wife was pulling out of parking lot and there was a blind spot basically and she turned left into a 05 pathfinder that was going prob 45mph. Air bags went off and she hit her head on door pillar I think. Anyway whole front end is toast and pretty sure crumple zones got crumpled cuz I opened the trunk and it wouldn't close again and they also had to rip the door off to get to her.

So my question is mine was a 97 5 speed and they are hard to find and I know someone that has a 99 special edition that said too bad I didnt want an auto cuz he would have sold it to me cheap. If I can buy mine back from insurance for cheap and can get a steal on his is it worth it to do the swap? I would have everything I need from old car. Then could part out the rest of it like interior and motor, or keep motor.

What're your thoughts?

Thanks, I got that part covered already and I have a truck to drive so I'm not in a hurry to replace it and she has vicodin and is asleep so I gotta figure out the other stuff. I have to make that decision in the next couple days with the insurance looking at it tomorrow or Tuesday

My thoughts? Don't let her drive again.

Pick up the '99 and swap. Don't forget to swap coils too.

Sorry to hear about your wife. That being said, how many girls have wrecked max's recently!!?? Its a damn epidemic. You think I let a female drive my car? Hell no she doesn't know my car like I do and thus I cant trust her

She's been driving for 16 years without as much as being pulled over let alone being in any kind of accident.

So you think its worth the work? I loved the car and want another one but its gotta be a stick so maybe I will take closer look at the 99.

It all depends on what they offer to give me for the car, what they will sell it back to me for and what the 99 will cost.

Personally I would start the search for a new one you like. Pull the parts you want from the old one and start from scratch. Bring a few interior pieces over so you remember and be done with it. I dont know where you are but in ATL max's are dirt cheap

Sorry to hear about the wife and car, but glad to hear that the wife is OK. That's the important thing...trust me

Regarding the car, the 99s have been known to have issues with the NATS system (engine immobilizer), which is a potential downfall, but 99 is the only year of Crimson Blaze and Lakeshore Blue (Mine!), so that's a plus!

You can always swap out the tranny from the 97 and throw it into the 99, and sell the auto off the 99.

Yes she is ok considering the impact, the Max protected her very well, a concussion isnt bad.

The 99 is red but it has been repainted, i have only seen it from the outside a few times, every time i am at the house it is in garage. I am pretty sure it is in really good shape and they might be the original owners.

I am going to have a month off work this summer with a baby due mid July so i will have some time to work on it then. And depending on the numbers like you said selling the auto and other parts off mine i could make some money on the deal in the long run.

Just debating if i want to take on that kind of project. With how long it took me to find the one i had that if the 99 is immaculate it might be worth the hassle

Why do you say it's been repainted?
If its a 99 SE Limited in Crimson Blaze red, it's a rare car.

Wow, glad the wife is ok! To bad about the car. And did my context clues just tell me your wife was prego too!? :/ Yikes!

About the cars... The 99 is notorious for bad coil packs, somehow i havent had any... It has some issues with the NATS system but in 2 years I've had none and worse case a locksmith can reprogram for like $80... The 99 ECU pinout is ever so slightly different and for a seamless swap you'd want a 99 5spd ECU otherwise you will have a constant cel.

Id say dont buy back the car unless its just a sentimental thing and you want stuff off of it. Dont buy the 99 if you dont like auto's and dont want to source everything youll need. I say get a 98 5spd and get the best of both worlds! Digi ODO, newer climate control and you can swap in a 99 ambient button controller, no NATS, no weird wiring or random parts that only half the 99's had!

Buy a 99. Don't even bother fixing the car up.

I get paranoid when my mom drove mine and now its worse because I have a 04 i35 now but I think it would be worth using your car as a donor to swap into a new maxima and sell what's left between both.

I was reading the swap details and yes it looks like a ton of work. I will see what they will sell it to me for, it would be nice to have a spare motor and tires and wheels, tires were almost brand new. Also spare coils and anything else but just depends. Maxima are expensive here in WA, finding a 97-99 with decent miles and in good shape they are $3500-4000

I hope your wife is ok. Sorry about the car.

As for the insurance company, a car is totalled when the repairs reach 75% of the car's resale value. What ever they use to calculate the resale value (that's where they get you) they then deduct for other old damage, such as rust, dents and other damage.

They will probably ask you if you want to buy the car back from them. The price will be the scrap value. I don't know how they calculate that. Three years ago, I could have bought my car back for $1750.

Good luck.

Joemax...you're in WA? Are you on the facebook group? We've got folks who could help with parts and what not...I know Blackwind is doing a 3.5 swap at the moment, so he's probably a good source of info for ya.

i dont let my lady drive the max...she curbs her truck. i totalled mine and got 3400 for it and bought a 98se with 5 speed and swapped over my sounds and my leather and called it a day...and i had still had some xtra money for goodies.

Yes blue Dakota is mine, that will be the daily driver for now. I went and looked at it today and it is worse then I thought. The bumper is about a foot towards passenger side, even the sunroof popped open and I opened the trunk and it wouldn't close again. The whole car is twisted. Once they take it from tow yard to thier storage lot and I will have full access to it so I can take stereo and speakers out and what ever else I want. Probably will take coils and maybe MAF and whatever else I can scavenge. I will post a pic tonight

I think if i can get that 99 for a steal i may buy it and drive it for a while and then sell it and make some money off it when i can find a nice 5 speed. With how mangled my car is I dont want to mess around with having it in my driveway and trying to tear it apart to do a swap.
