hid's shut off when i turn on high beams???

so wtf is going on??? i let them warm up first, then i flip on the high beams and zap!!! lights turn off and i have to switch the lights off completely and turn them back on again. it did this when i first installed them 2 years ago and has'nt done this in a year or so. seems like when it gets cold this happens, when its warm out at night no problem??? i have a 4300k ddm tuning kit and once last night the drivers side flipped off and would'nt come back on until i flipped the lights off and back on again too. do i have a bad ballast or something??? thanks

Unless you have a high low kit, this is normal.
Not sure why there not reigniting when low beams are back on?

do you have a relay harness installed?

PSU09MAXIMA Jun 15, 2012 08:07 AM

I'm thinking could be bad ballast and also as stated above are you running a relay?

I had the same issue but when I would switch back down to low beams, only one side would generally come back on and was worse when colder. After installing a couple relays, no more problem.

I also had this same problem but it does not matter if it was cold or not.
I took out my TRS harness and the relays were corroded from rain.

Check your relays as well OP.

Like others asked. Is it a hi/low kit or just low beam? Do you have a relay harness installed? If so what condition is the relay in?

moNYtx Jun 15, 2012 03:50 PM

You need the bixenon kit installed to have hi beams. What brand are they?

ShocknAwe Jun 15, 2012 04:06 PM

even with a hi/low kit the difference between the high and low is negligible. With HID's the low should be plenty plus in stock projector housings the beam pattern does all sorts of strange things between low and high.

yes, its a high/low hid setup. as stated, i have the ddm 4300k kit with homemade harness. yes, they have a seperate relay and the whole setup is only 2 years old and dry as a bone. it did this when it was new too. go to flick on high beams and pop, they shutoff. dont know if its the harness or not as i did'nt make it, another member made it for me. and i have a retrofit with projectors, look at my sig.

Its probably the harness because when I was messing with mine I put the wires back in the wrong place and when I would go to put my highs on nothing would happen the lights would actually turn off. Try swapping the wires around some

Samething happened with me, i have a low beam 55w 6000k ddm tuning hid kit ( with the relay) kept doing it to me until one day my hid's wouldn't turn on at all, when i was inspecting the harness i noticed that the Power cable melted in half between the battery and the relay to one ballast, i had to repair it , ever since then it hasn't failed on me.
