Y pipe install question?

I don't have a floor jack and I don't know of anyone who does that I can borrow. How much would a shop normally charge to install the Y pipe, because I don't want to get crushed by my car. I need to know because when I go into the shop I want to have an idea on what is a good deal. Thanks.

I was quoted 150 IIRC for installation of a Y pipe at a performance shop. Some places won't do it since it removes the OEM pre-cats.

You know, if you have a set of RAMPS you should be able to do it...

or better yet, go to the regional subforums and throw it out there, there's lots of folks in Cali that could probably help ya out

Do people in regional forums generally charge too? Depends on the person I guess. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

^^most likely anyone is going to charge you unless you personally know the person

It would be cheaper to buy a jack and some stands, than to pay someone to install this and any future mods.

GGENIUS 06-28-2012 03:50 PM

just buy some ramps for like 30 bucks n call it a day

infinimax96 06-28-2012 06:48 PM

My max won't clear ramps. :P But seriously you could get a nice 3ton jack and stands for less than $150.

Most shops probably won't do it because you are removing emissions cats to install the new ypipe.

Yeah as far as ramps go, I barely cleared them on stock suspension.

gthirtymax 06-30-2012 07:20 AM

Your header studs are going to be rusted. I have some available if you need them.

Huh? I never had any melted bolts on my Cat. Rusted yes, but none melted..

to the op, if you don't have jack stands then you probably don't want to deal with the y-pipe. by now it's pretty tough to deal with those nuts. under the headers some nuts will be fused to the stud. it easy to remove but you need to unscrew it very slowly so you don't break off the stud. since stud n nuts are fused you should be prepare with new ones. 2 nuts connected to the cat are fused so you need to cut off those nuts.

auto shop will charge you $100. most people don't have heating tools otherwise it would be an easy job. propane torch will get you nowhere.

LOL

OP just get jack stands. Jack ur car up with stock emergency jack. Works for me, just takes a while longer to get it up hahaha

For the cost of going to a shop, you can purchase ramps, jack, and stands. I have all three and they make working on the car sooo much easier. Drive up the ramps (place 12" 2x4's same direction as the ramps, about 6"up the ramp, to 6" off at the bottom reduces vertical angle to help clear front bumper) then use the jack to lift it up and secure it on jack stands.
