I just put on a oil pan gasket on my 98 max due to oil leak there was no gasket on at all which was odd but anyways. How long do I have to wait to my oil back in a test drive?

Shift_A32B 11-28-2012 01:45 PM

That's because the oil pan is sealed by RTV silicone not a gasket :hat:

Hope he scraped off the old gasket before he put the new "gasket" on

I would let the RTV set overnight before filling with oil and starting the engine.

Quickywd01 11-28-2012 08:21 PM

You made it sound funny but anyway your answer is on the product you used. :) Some products have different drying times.

Nealoc187 11-29-2012 07:32 PM

the first time I ever did an engine swap I put RTV on the lower oil pan and had oil in the thing within 3 hours. it never leaked.

asand1 11-29-2012 07:41 PM

VWs' use white RTV. At the dealership we didn't wait at all.

Snypa 11-30-2012 06:09 PM

grey all day. Mechanics don't wait either.they do and send you on your jolly way. Last time I did it, I gave it like 3 hours before filling with oil and starting engine.

Trini Boom 12-01-2012 04:55 AM

I actually let mine sit 24 hours before filling back with oil on a summer day. Seeing that its a bit colder, same time might be ok.

anthony18 12-01-2012 05:00 AM

Thanks for all the replies Unfortunately after I reinstalled my oil pan my sister took my car -.- so now I might have to redo it do to a bigger leak

Markusfisher 12-01-2012 07:23 AM

RTV has awesome instructions on the tube and packaging. Something like apply it wait 15 minutes until it's tacky reinstall and start engine next day.

anthony18 12-02-2012 09:17 PM

Well now since I have to re seal my oil pan which is better? ultra grey only or ultra grey with an oil pan gasket

asand1 12-02-2012 09:36 PM

Why do you have to reseal it again? What does your sister driving it have to do with anything? Nissan didn't use a gasket, why should you?

anthony18 12-02-2012 10:25 PM

Because she drove it 30 minutes after I reinstalled the oil pan and I was wondering which one would create a better seal

I fail to see the problem. Is it still leaking? When I worked in the VW dealership we sent them out as quick as we could put the oil back in.

asand1 12-02-2012 10:46 PM

Edited for ignorance.

anthony18 12-02-2012 11:17 PM

There's still a leak and maybe VW are different and I'm referring to the lower oil pan but what do you mean by cork I have picture in the beginning of the thread i think it's just aluminum on steel

Did you clean the mating surfaces with alcohol or something to get it oil free? If you applied rtv on an oily surface it won't stick.

If you are referring to the the lower stamped steel pan, then yes it needs a gasket. If it is cork DO NOT use RTV, as it will chemically react and eat the cork. The upper pan does not use a gasket, just RTV.

I advise against using cork as a gasket, there was a thread somewhere on a here as a result of it and when it rots, you will not like the results of it inside your engine. Yes the filter screen is there but still I wouldn't think about using that. Just RTV only.

anthony18 12-05-2012 04:23 PM

Yeah I won't use cork I should just use ultra grey with no gasket because I'm getting a new car in a couple of months

Nealoc187 12-05-2012 05:40 PM

since when does our lower oil pan use a gasket? am i going crazy? granted I haven't had the oil pan off a VQ in a few years but I don't remember there ever being a gasket in all the VQs I've ever torn down, assembled, worked on, etc.

surban1 12-05-2012 05:49 PM

the lower stamped steel oil pan has a gasket available at rockauto & etc. the mating surface between the block and the "oil pan" (as known to nissan) known as the "upper oil pan" around here, uses rtv.

Trini Boom 12-07-2012 08:10 PM

OEM does not have a gasket for it. Aftermarket suppliers are making one for what reason, I don't know.

anthony18 12-07-2012 09:33 PM

I'm only referring to the lower oil pan not the upper oil pan that's a different ball game there. I'm leaking everywhere but don't have the time nor funds to fix them so my car will be driven till It can't move anymore then ill part her out

that's what we're saying. the lower oil pan does not have any gasket from the factory. it uses rtv only (just as the upper oil pan does, though the lower uses a greater quantity because you are mating stamped steel to machined aluminum).

Apologies, I have never had the pan off my engine.
I was looking through the FSM earlier today and realized my error. FSM does in fact call for RTV on the lower pan.
I was speaking from experience in general auto repair. Usually stamped steel pans would have a gasket, the VQ does not.
