Mazda Millenia Wheels Installed

Installed a set of the lightweight Millenia wheels today. The main point I want to make is the amount of work needed to get the rear wheels to fit is minimal. I read some old posts making it seem like it was a lot of work and a lot of grinding had to be done.
It was well under a couple minutes of actual sanding/grinding time. I used a Dremel with a sanding drum. The outer lip on the wheel near the centerbore only needs a few thousandths taken off to fit over the rear hub dust caps.

A total of 44lbs lighter then my reinforced (~16lb) rx7 wheels.
205/65R15 on the Millenias 32lb per corner
245/50R16 on the RX7s 43lb per corner

When I had the 225/55R16 on the RX7s, they were about 39-40lbs per corner when brand new.

One thing to note is that the 245s are practially brand new and only have 900 miles on them. And the 205s are maybe 1 or 2/32 from the wear bars. I wasn't able to weigh the wheels without tires, so there's a fudge factor of a couple pounds.

And no, I don't care how bad they look compared to the RX7 wheels. I installed these to see how they affect my fuel economy since I've only been getting 25-27mpg with the 3.5.

Good old Millennia wheels, what an old school weight savings trick!

I used to run 3rd gen wheels, came in around 33 lbs. They have a much better offset.

That is a lot better, I didn't realize those wheels were so light. What size tires were you running on them?

Nice Leonard!

Do you know how much of the weight savings came from the wheels, and how much from the tires? I'm thinking most of your weight savings is from the tires.

The millenias are 11.7 lbs ea, so the weight savings per wheel would be about 4.3 lbs each.

I've yet to buy tires for my set of millenias but if I stick with P6s the 205/65 15s are gonna be about 4 lbs lighter than my 225/50 17s... with the wheels being about 15 lbs lighter each per my G35 17s, that's about 75 lbs difference.

Looks good, man! Glad I saw this, too. Didn't know you had to chop the hub bore on the wheels.

I'm not sure, I haven't had the opportunity to weigh them without tires.
Lets do some math with internet weights.

My 245s weigh 26 lbs http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....omCompare1=yes
The RX7 wheels are 16 lbs
Total: 42 lbs

The 205s weigh 18 lbs http://www.carid.com/images/nexen/in...ger-cp641.html
The Millenias weigh 11.5 lbs, 12 max
Total: 30lbs

Looks like most of it is from the tires. I used a bathroom scale to weigh the parts, and I only weighed two of the Millenia wheels. One was 30lbs and the other was 32. I should have weighed all of the wheels, but this will do for now.

It's nothing major, I think its where the center caps clip into, though.

If I see an improvement on these tires, I definitely want to get a set of LRR tires.

Thanks guys. I might try a set of those 3rd gen wheels in the future, these offsets take a little getting used to on a 6" wide wheel. +50 didin't look bad on the 8" wide RX7s.

I'll wait a bit before reporting back on mpg, but there is definitely a difference with these wheels/tires. I only need to hold the throttle at upper 1% to lower 2% to maintain 45 mph on a level road. (My scangaugeII bounces back and forth between 1 and 2 on the TPS setting) It was a solid 2% with the RX7 wheels.

I forgot to mention that I used extended 'tuner lug nuts' on both wheels. My precise hand scales show that all 20 weigh less than two of the OEM lug nuts.

Should definitely be a noticeable increase since skinnier tires = less rolling resistance.

Are you running staggered setup with 205 in front and 245 in the rear?

I know, I had just bought those tires a week before I found the Millenias at a junkyard. The plan is to swap the RX7s on for full throttle activities.

Pics and price?

All 4 are the exact same and slightly under 1 rotation cycle, on file at discount tire. Not sure if that will transfer or not.....I bought them when they just came out, after the 520's, and paid about $600. If I could get half that I would be happy. We could go half on shipping as well which is likely to be about $75 out to AZ

I know the gas gauge isn't the most proper way to estimate fuel economy, buuuut

on a full tank I've gone 100 before it started to drop with my stock 15"s. I haven't noticed a difference with my 16"s but the over all diameter of the wheel didn't really change. And I think the aftermarkets were actually lighter, haven't varified that yet though.

Did the gauge sneak past F when you filled up? It usually takes a while to drop below.
Then at about 3/4s it just friggin drops drastically to half and hangs out a while too.

let us know your number crunch though at the end of the tank. I'm curious what kind of run you will have with those Mazda wheels

Yes it does. All I'm saying is that per the placement of the needle on the gas gauge, I am getting more miles than usual.

I know you work with you Max a lot, I've lurked on your threads for a while before. Just curious, was this endeavor strictly for increased efficiency or is there really a gain to smaller wheels in track applications? I heard that smaller more stock configs tend to perform better on Sunday track type events. ?

I'm doing it to increase efficiency. Generally speaking, smaller wheels are lighter, and 15's have a much better selection of sizes for slicks than 16's.

Filled up today, and the grand total is 29.6mpg with the millenia wheels.

Of the 424 miles, 30 were freeway. So about 93% city driving under 50 mph.

Oh yeah, still haven't reinstalled the ac compressor so all city driving was with the windows down.

Another 90% city tank 29.7 mpg.

Then a 5% city tank on a 270 mile trip from Phoenix to Sedona through the mountains, 3000ft change in elevation came in at 27.8 mpg round trip.

And now the RX7 boat anchors are back on the car until the comp-2s wear out and I plan to use the warranty on that to get a discount on some LRR tires for the millenia wheels or 3rd gen wheels.

Welp I sure didn't see this one coming.

I've filled up twice since the last post. Forgot to mention that AC compressor has been reinstalled before the 5% city tank, but to this date still needs to be charged and has not been used.

1st fill was ~100miles on the millenia wheels, and the rest with RX7 wheels, 85% city, 26mpg.
2nd fill was all RX7 wheels, 90% city, 29.3 mpg.

Both fillups were done in relatively cool weather.
Only major change was the addition of tcw3 to the gas tank at every fillup since 6/9/13. I know its supposed to help a little, but it sure doesn't account for 2+mpg.

What motor oil are you using? Since I switched from 5W30 to 0W30, 27.5 inch tall tires and the use of the synthetic tcw3 my mileage has gone from 22.8 to 27.4mpg. This is summertime driving, 16 inch 5 spokes, and 450-600 miles a week with a 40/60 hwy/city mix.

Just picked up another set of wheels at the JY today. The 4 weighed in between 29lbs and 39lbs with tire. I'll have the tires dismounted soon so I can get an accurate weight of the wheels.

Could you post a couple pics with the third gens on the car?

id like to see the offset in a normal pic vs the "facebook angles" that seem to be everywhere

appreciate it

It was all in this thread. lol Same size I have on the Millenia wheels 205/65R15. No spacers, the 3rd gen wheels are 15x6 +35, whereas the Millenias have an offset of +50.

Do the Millenia wheels fit the Gen 7 Maximas (2012)

I have a 2012 SV with sports package and need winter rims with smaller diameter and thinner footprint. TR recommends 17 with 7.5 215 blizzacks. Any comments are appreciated.
