1995 Maxima, 156k, won't start on first try
 

Totally weird. I've had the dealer do all the periodic maintenance. About a month ago, every few starts I'd have to turn the key twice to get it to start.

Now it's petty much every time that the car has sat for my than 30 minutes (not sure it's exactly that short of time).

Just to be clear... Get in the car, turn the key, it cranks over sounding good and fast, doesn't start even after a few seconds. Turn the key back to off, turn it to start again and it fires right up.

Once it's running it runs great. Shut it off and it starts right back up. Only takes a flick of the key.

My Chevy brain is telling me fuel pump, does that sound like the first thing to check? If so, uh... Where's the Schrader valve and what pressure at run, start and running should I have?

I had the same exact problem I changed everything from coils fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, crankshaft position sensor, camshaft position sensor, and iacv, intake air temperature sensor maf sensor and starter. Now it starts really good in the morning if you let it sit for a few hours after driving then it cranks. But now I changed my ecu to a new one and it starts really good everytime no more problems. Have u ever messed with the ecu screw on you car. If u have then that might be it. you should not ever mess with the screw. That's what I did once, I turned my ecu screw and it started to have the starting problem because that I bought a new one and no more problems. Only thing I can say is don't touch that screw. Also check that your car idles correctly at 700rpm if it doesn't check your iacv black screw and adjust it to get 700rpm.

Try this next time...turn to key to on ( not start ) then back to off. Then try to start the car. If it starts it's probably the fuel pressure regulator.

Turning the key to Run and then off then back doesn't help. I had another car where that worked so I've already tried it.

I think I found the issue. I now think its the ignition switch. Stumbling around searching for suggestions, I read one where someone's wife told him she just "turns the key harder" LOL.

And, yep that works. Every time.

It's really a "fine line" between not turning far enough and the car not starting and that little bit more and it starting.

So I guess I'm going to try that first.

If that works then all you need to do is replace the plastic pice in the back of the switch.
Its not to hard to do all you'll need is a screwdriver & it only takes like 20 minutes

I have the same problem but mine starts the first try if it sits for only like 10 minutes or long periods of time. Nothing in between. I've replaced my ignition switch but there's a chance I messed it up.
