For daily driving and longevity, check these newer tires out. Off-brand but pretty amazing so far. I have these on my Subaru 2.5rs commuter car. UTCG 540!!! $260shipped is stupid cheap.

My 96 came with steel wheels, and ran 205/65-15 according to the FSM.
According to http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
205/65-15 are 25.5"
235/45-17 are 25.3"
The 235/45-17 are .2' shorter and the speedometer will be fast by 0.6%,
or reading 60MPH while driving 59.6mph.
This is a very close match and will ensure a safety margin in regards to speeding tickets.
