Custom "OEM" STS

Custom "OEM" STS
I'm trying to make a custom short throw shifter for my 4th gen (but this applies to 00-01 as well!). But I need some measurements first. My reasoning for doing this is I heard bad things about eBay STS so I figured I would rather spend that money or maybe even less to have a shop (or someone with the skill set) to cut and weld the OEM shifter to maintain OEM quality.
Glancing at this link, you will see a comparison of OEM and Courtesy Nissan STS http://vbxmaxima.8m.com/shifter.html
Anyways, so I'm looking for someone who has bought a STS but hasn't installed it yet. Maybe you can provide picture documents of measurements. I can take my OEM shifter out to take measurements but if someone has one laying around, then I would really appreciate it if you took some measurements for me. If you read the how-to, the top shifter is Courtesy Nissan and bottom one is OEM. Shifter height is approximately the same but the ball joint is located higher.
What are your opinions? Is this worth doing?
All eBay STS are ~$40 and all the name brand are ~$150-200. I can't imagine anyone charging more than $40 to make a simple cut and weld back together.

When it says 40% throw reduction, does it mean the length from the tip to the ball? I'm confused as to why the Courtesy Nissan STS would be enlarged?
