To summarize so you don't have to read this long thread..

6 weeks ago. Car suddenly started smoking out of the tailpipe and hesitating. The next morning the mechanic could find nothing wrong other than a dead battery. He scanned it, checked the injectors, the o2 sensors, the plugs, did a leak down test and a compression test. He told me the engine might be shot with 160K on it. Car is in mint condition. We picked it up and it ran perfect for 4 weeks straight.

2 weeks ago.. out of the blue it did the same thing again and had to be towed because it stalled and wouldn't restart. We had it towed home this time and I replaced the Fuel Pressure Regulator for the heck of it, put it back together and it started and ran perfectly. Took it for a ride and in 2 blocks it started smoking like crazy out of the tailpipe and hesitating just like before.

Had it towed to a different repair shop. He started it and noticed it was smoking badly and hesitating and planned on working on it the next day. he called me and told me it was probably something internal in the motor.
The next day he started it and it ran perfect with no smoke. He checked everything, scanned it, pulled the plugs, checked the injector . He ran it for the entire day and couldn't find a single thing wrong with it. He told me to come and get it. I picked it up and it has been running perfect ever since.
So.. basically... after 2 mechanics and me taking it apart.. nothing was done to it other than a new FPR which it obviously didn't need.
The car repaired itself.

Maybe it was a ground issue then. Simply dis-connecting and connecting an electrical part can clean its connection somewhat.

The only electrical part I can think of that would cause your problems would be the crank sensors, but they are way down low so I don't think anyone touched/got near them.

The other possibility is that it could have been the ignition condenser. An extremely rare part that almost never fails, but maybe yours developed a bad connection. It is located up top and would be "disturbed" when the mechanics were checking the injectors/fpr/O2s etc.

Who knows? The mystery remains.

Well, another 3 days of flawless driving. The thing that sucks is this is my daughters car and I am too paranoid about letting her drive it to school and to work because I was never able to find out what exactly was wrong with the motor. I am driving it every day and I would prefer to drive my own car.

Just watch, as soon as you give it back to your daughter, the problem will rear its ugly head.

I removed the intake manifold recently for another reason. While I was in there anyway I decided I might as well have the injectors cleaned and serviced. I sent them to
Injector RX in Houston. They charged me a total of 116 dollars. Turn around time was very quick. Two of the injectors had a fair spray pattern, four had a poor spray pattern. I am looking forward to better performance and better mileage.

I did not want to put the UIM back on and risk the problems you are currently having.

I guess I was blessed with getting the SHI (self healing injector) option on my Maxima.
My injectors fixed themselves!

When you install the injectors you need to make sure to be gentle and plug them in as best as you can with your fingers. Then to gradually tighten them down with the screws. I made that mistake and ended up ruining a lower o-ring. The car ran beautifully at first. Then overnight the pressure got to the o-ring and it tore. The next morning it took a multiple tries to get it started, was running crazy rough, blew thick white smoke out the back, and would even throw gas out the tailpipe when reved. It took me days of not driving it, testing the coils and sparkplugs, and hoping that the car didn't have a blown headgasket (like I read all over the web), to have the thought to check the new plug I had just put in. I pulled it out and surely enough, the lower o-ring had been damaged, allowing fuel to run easily past it into the cylinder making it flood and idle roughly. I replaced the lower o-ring and the car runs smoother than ever. I did take around 30 miles of driving for the extra fuel and carbon to burn completely out of the exhaust though.

that white smoke could be fuel that leaked into the cylinder.
The injectors may fail internally If you pull all six while still clipped on to the rail then turn on the ignition switch (not the car) you can look and see if these have fuel dripping. I would imagine they can fail intermittently.
Because of the chemicals wouldn't the coolant the smoke might be a bit a blue or some other color if it was coolant?
