96 maxima needs help massive rear oil leak

Hello,
My 96 Maxima died on the Interstate yesterday. Check engine lite came on, then five minutes later, it was starting to overheat, then the transmission started to slip and the engine lost 80% power. I looked in the rear view and could see an oil trail so I cut every thing off and towed it home.

The oil leak is dripping from the center rear [back side ] of the engine [side next to the firewall] There was possibly 1 liter of oil in the crankcase, when I checked.

Transmission acts as if there is a vacuum leak and does not want to shift correctly.

Codes thrown are for front o2 sensor and a knock sensor.

If I fill it with oil it will run, but not for long as it is pumped out, doesn't appear to leak out, it is forced out under pressure, so hopefully I caught it in time.

Overheat,, I shut it down before it went red
75% ] on the gauge.

I have not looked yet as I need ramps and tolls and such, so thought I would ask for suggestions first and spend Sunday checking it out

Has 190,000 miles and really never gave any real trouble except for an occasional ck engine the dealer could not fix.

I am sure I am not the first in 19 years to experience this.

And definitely need some advice on what is happening

Thanks in advance

Well, Darby, that was a real stupid thing to do, to keep driving the car after the oil light came on. I hope you didn't damage the engine. You're lucky the bearings didn't seize.

That said, the 2 most logical things to check would be to look for a hole in the oil filter or a broken oil pressure sending unit.

And really, you should be posting this in the 4th generation section. You will get more and quicker responses.

Hey Wizard - can you move this for this guy?
