can't get out of Park
 

My 95 SE was parked on a level surface the other night. When I got in to leave, it started right up, butI couldn't get it out of Park. After much effort, it finally seemed to slip into reverse easily.

Same thing happened again last night. It seems to go into reverse more easily if I'm leaning back into my seat!! Am I imagining this??? I don't know, but I'm worried that I may have a serious problem. Any thoughts?

yeah - you should have it checked out.....it probabaly comes down easier when your sitting back in your seat cause of the added leverage........something may be wrong with the mechanism

OK, to resolve this problem, once you come to park. Stop the car, put the handbrake up, and then put it in park, that way the car doesnt roll back on to the transmission Lock. This will solve your problem all together

Seems like a problem with your shifter assembly.

I believe there to be a solenoid under the trim plate for the shifter. My guess is that it has has an adjustment there as well.

I didn't pay much attention to it when I installed my stereo, but I did see the mechanism and shifter linkage under the trim.

a friend of mine had the same problem and had to have her mechanic adjust the mechanism.

Not sure on the Max, but you should hear a click when you press on the footbrake. This should activate the locking solonoid. If it doesn't, then your solonoid may be faulty or the switch under the footbrake ... or wiring between (doubt if it is the switch ... I think it might share the same as your brake lights, then your brake lights would not be working)

I am familiar with this on other cars ... mine is 5sp so I am not certain.

To avoid this problem temporarily (again not sure if it will work on the max) put it in neutral instead of park and use the parking brake. You would not want to get stuck somewhere. On some cars, it will not allow you to do this, you will not be able to remove the key from the ignition in neutral. If that is the case, you're out of luck!

its probably this & when you start the car, do not let go handbrake go. start the car, hit the foot brakes shift it into whatever gear you want then let the ebrake go. If you let the handbrake go before you shift into R or D or whatever, it'll be just as hard
