so, my emergency brake cable is stuck....

and the right rear caliper won't release and is burning up my pads and rotor ( not too bad, it releases part way) so, what do i have to replace?? the whole cable on both sides, or can i just do one side and catch a brake??? ( brake, get it?? :D ) thankx

I would just do both while I was there.
Not that much more work.

If you're driving an automatic and need to get by for awhile, just disconnect it at the caliper.

My ebrake was sticking on my 97 auto and it eventually released after sitting for a little bit. I just didn't pull it up anymore. Maybe you can get by like that until you change it?

In the snow (rust) belt it is common for parking brakes to seize. It is a combination of rust and water actually freezing in the cable housing. Many suggest not setting the brake in the winter months because of this. If you are auto you can manually pull the lever on the caliper into the released position and not ust the parking brake until you can replace the cables.

Before you replace the cable, make sure that it is not the emergency brake portion of the caliper. You can do this by disconnecting the cable at the caliper on both sides, and see if either side binds within the cable housing. If neither side does, then it is, most likely, a problem with the caliper. Otherwise, get one or two rear cables. A while back, Rockauto had some pretty good prices on their brake cables - give them a look. Otherwise, i thought that they were pretty pricey.

i would be willing to bet that the caliper, along with the cable, is shot too. haven't done that right rear caliper in years. and the cables were taped up at the dealer like 6 years ago.

I drive a 97 5spd and I remember when my ebrake cables wouldnt hold the calipers closed. I would park with my tires pointed towards the curb. Well one night, I parked on a slight incline. I woke up in the morning to the cops banging at my door looking for the owner of the maxima that rolled down the street, missed like two parked cars, and ended up in someone's driveway!! God was wit me that day man cuz that could have been ugly

I ended up getting it fixed, but the cables and everything at the caliper needed to be replaced except the calipers themselves. It was all rusted to crap.
