Speedometer

Hi all
Just purchased a 1999 max qx which is nice! I have a problem with the speedo, sometimes it works and sometimes the needles either go all the way to the top or go all way to the bottom and the mileage screen goes blank then after a while it goes back to normal! Can this problem be fixed?
Thanks

The solder points behind the cluster are getting weak, either repair that or replace cluster. Or it can be a speed sensor code that is stored.

Your problem is either the gauge cluster itself (solder points), the wiring leading to and from the gauge cluster, or the vehicle speed senor (located on top of the transmission), or the wires leading to and from that.

Your easiest and cheapest route is to buy a new vss. They're cheap and easy to replace. There are a couple write ups here on the org. If that doesn't help and your not good with soldering, then either buy a gauge cluster from here in the classifieds section or go pull one from a local junkyard (also easy to replace but more involved than vss)

Just change your cluster, its pretty easy!! Couple of screws out of gauge cluster gourmet i think 2, then bam your finger tips are at the cluster. Then pull those screws out, tilt top of guages forward to remove plug in and done. Then just install your new/old bought one and go on. I tried re-soldering mine didnt work or i failed either one lol

If you swap the gauge cluster isn't your mileage going to be incorrect? thus fake mileage? from what I heard is illegal to do.

I've thought about that too! Is it possible to set the new speedo to the correct milage of the original one?
