Please ID this part - help diagnose CEL

While tracking down causes for a CEL code, my cheapo smoke machine caused smoke to be emitted from only one place whether the car was running or shut off. It was the only spot I could find where smoke came out of the system.

Please take a look at the attached photo and tell me what the round port is and why (engine running or off) it would be "open" to emit smoke that was forced into the system through the vacuum test input in the engine bay (the one with the green screw-off cap).

Thanks.

That part is a small air filter for the charcoal EVAP canister that it is mounted on. It has no open or close valve on it.

Depending on where you are injecting the smoke may be the answer as to whether this is normal or not.

Smoke was injected into the system through the test input in the engine bay (the test input port has a green screw-off cap).

The smoke comes out in much higher than trace volume - whether the engine is running or shut off.

What DTC(s) are you getting that are tripping the CEL?
