car won't start / stay running

So 99 maxima, 170k miles. My son drives it and called tonight to say it won't start. Battery is a few months old and he says it cranks fine but won't start up. He called back a bit later and said he tried again and it started but it only ran for about 30 seconds and died.

It's getting towed back here now, any suggestions on easy things I can check before giving up and taking it to a shop? And yes there is plenty of gas in it. Never had any problems before and there was as far as I can tell no warning sign (no check engine light, no problems running before, etc).

Check the vaccuum hose to the fuel pressure regulator next to the intake manifold. Dies it smell like gas?

This seems like a fuel pressure issue.

So checked the codes, it's throwing a P0325 (Knock Sensor Bank 1) and P0340 (Camshaft Position Sensor Bank 1). Relevant?

Work on the cam position sensor.

The ecu does not know what position the cam is in.
Result is the problems you are having.

Ignore the knock 325 knock sensor code. Chances are that it will go away when the other one does.

Yeah knock sensor always comes on, came on when an O2 sensor went bad too.

From what I can tell googling, bad camshaft position sensor does indeed prevent a car from starting and cause it to stall while driving. $38 from rockauto so seems like a logical place to start! Hope it's not too hard to get at...

Cam sensor is easy to get to. Google a diagram of it. Its on the timing chain cover. You can change it in less than 5 minutes and might not even get your hands dirty.

Yeah it's easy except I spent far too long trying to find the sensor on bank 1 before realizing the car only has one sensor and it's on bank 2... Apparently the 3.5 engine in the later cars has 2 sensors and those are the youtube videos I found... Then I noticed my haynes manual only said 'sensor' singular and described the location of the one on bank 2. Swapped it out, reset the codes and so far it's running fine.
