Valve cover bolt snapped

I was woking on replacement the valve cover seal for the front and rear for my maxima. One bolt snapped and broke on the rear valve bolt #1 any one knows the part number or where can I get replacements for the broken bolt. I also needs some idea what is the safest way to remove the left over bolt on the engine bay

You can probably get new bolts at the junkyard

To remove the broken bolt, you will have to drill a hole in the bolt and use and easy-out extractor. The torque for those little lbolts is 10 lb/ft.

120" lbs would be almost twice the spec. this is what I have for those bolts .
.
Place the valve cover onto the upper engine. Put the 10 bolts on in the order of the Chilton guide:1 middle lower left, 2 middle upper left, 3 middle lower right, 4 middle upper right, 5 far left lower, 6 far left upper, 7 far right lower, 8 far right upper, 9 far left middle, 10 far right middle.

Do not over tighten.

There are two torque specs assigned. First, torque to 1-3 Nm or 9-26 inch/lbs in the above order. Next, torque to 5.4-7.4 Nm or 48-65 inch/lbs in the above order.

As you can see the Valve Cover (CV) bolts have a shoulder that makes contact with the head.

You really can't tighten one of those bolts past the shoulder contact point without snapping off the threaded part of the bolt into the head.

Many years ago I snapped one of the bolts. Fortunately, there was a jagged edge on the bolt where it snapped apart that allowed me to use a small screwdriver to back out the bolt from the head.

If it had been a clean break, I would have needed to use a drill with an easy-out as Dennis noted.

Mosdefnitely,
After you get those boltts out get a torque wrench for this job. I replaced my valve cover a couple of months ago on my 5.5 and the torque wrench takes the guess work out of the equation.

You are right. I sure as heck didn't have my brain working when I typed that.

Nissan recommends a 2 stage tightening process so that the gasket compresses evenly.
