Cylinder Head Gasket Worth the replacement?

Hi guys,

Not sure if this was asked on here before but I have a 96 GLE max (my baby) She now has 363k miles on her Original engine and Trans. and for the last 100K miles I have had a leak with some diagnosis and now that I have a 2017 Platinum she has been sitting in the drive way awaiting some work on the infamous rear quarters from rust and rot due to the sunroof drains at the back. But anyway just curious if I should rebuild the engine or tackle it via a rebuilt one that is like 2.2k on ebay from a rebuild shop in Michigan. Just wanted some input and I am very mechanically inclined just want to see if its worth it, I like keeping vin and serial numbers matching.

Thanks

Junk yard engines can have a lot of life in them.
Enough life to perhaps take your car to the 500 mark if you insist.

Used engines dont seem to cost all that much, and are plentiful. That said, there are some things you will need to do to a used engine before you install it. Things like certain seals and the waterpump.

On the other hand, you have a 22 year old car with 363k miles on it and rust issues. Other 4th gen Maximas are available for less money with fewer miles on them.

I'd say that your car should live on in in your memories, it has done it's duty.

I will say if your up for the task of a busy project this can be where you start. The engine with 363k depending on your maintaince history you will have to do what would be recommended at this time of work. The fuel hoses vent hoses coolant hoses, seals of all kinds major, small engine related oil pan timing chain or water pump ect. This is the time you can do it if your in their

Depends on what you see when you remove the heads. You will want to send out any questionable parts for a resurfacing so the new gasket will seal properly.

Here are some pictures from an engine that I replaced with one from a wrecked salvage yard Maxima with 83,000 miles.

The engine in the picture had roughly 160,000 miles and had been run hot with low compression on two cylinders.

It was much cheaper to go with a low miles engine from a wrecked vehicle compared to overhauling the original.

Thanks for the feedback and there are a lot of things to think about but I will make a decision once this cold weather leaves NY. I like a project and I do have a 1995 parts car it was an SE that I can pull parts from and or work on if needed.

Thanks for all the replies

To be honest, I'd replace the whole engine with a lower mile engine as your current one did its job reaching 363k, and make sure you replace all the seals and important stuff before installing it, it makes it that much easier, new parts with no leaks, and cheaper.

Yeah I am thinking a lower mileage or that rebuilt long block for 2.2k and use my covers and new gaskets and seals that go along with it. I have spent a lot on the car and this might sound crazy but my 8 year old son wants to drive it when he is of age. Makes me want to keep it and gives me the chance to rebuild it as silly as that might sound. I know it might be a lost cause in some peoples eyes but I am not one to let go of my things that easily This is what she looks like
