spring like noise

drive up a steep driveway, turn left into and park on mostly level slightly uphill. later back up 30 ft-- turn hard left and go down the hill, first 10 ft going down the hill I get a BOING spring like sound-
no other front end issues. no clicks clacks, no steering looseness- no cv joint clicks --maxima 185000 easy miles.

what are possible causes of the Big boing noise? top strut mount?

What type of springs and struts are you running?

maximaxi 04-23-2018 07:21 PM

Probably a strut mount, and the struts themselves are probably toast by now, too.

Quick struts are awesome because they come pre-assembled, but the only ones worth buying for the 4th gen is Monroe Quick Strut.

Unfortunately, KYB doesn't make quick struts for these cars, and Gabriel's offerings for this car are weak with an elongated hole that will cause an alignment nightmare. (Gabriel fixed this when they released their new Guardian Readymount line, and the Guardians come in a snazzy red color, but that is Gabriel's lower line and might not last more than 30k, like Monroe's Roadmatic and Econo-Matic)

And the cheap Chinese quick struts are all scrap metal that won't last 10k

Also....Check your Strut Spring Insulators for splits or falling out.

IT ONLY DOES IT ON THIS ONE PERSONS very STEEP DRIVEWAY. that had lots of wheel turning, EVERYWHERE ELSE I DRIVE NO noise so maybe it is just starting, most of my driving is flat road driving

My advice would be to either take the advice you've been provided already or stay away from that one person's very steep driveway.

Off Shore Crap

OSC is just another cheap Chinese quick strut

Stick to Monroe's quick struts. If you buy all four in April, there is a $100 rebate. This makes the price competitive with the cheap Chinese garbage, and will last much longer :)

OSC, like all the other cheap quick struts, won't make it past 10k on a good day. The premium Monroe quick struts will last at least 50k.

kyb-gr2's, 9 years old with 100,000+ on them and maxspeed lowering springs. no complaints at all.

My front Kyb strut mounts failed on mine after 3 years.. was making all kinds of metal and klacking sounds... was so annoying to drive.. also probably dangerous. Was fixed and tried out a little more expensive strut mount than Kyb in hopes to get more life out of it. Heard Kyb are known to be a failure on these cars... Still got Kyb in the rears though.

josh, kyb-gr2's are the struts, not the mounts. i used oem strut mounts with no issues at all.
