The old "crank no start"

So the title says it- my 99 5speed with California emissions sat for a couple of weeks outside, it ran fine when parked but when I went to fire it up again the starter will make a good healthy effort but the engine does not even cough or start. Got P0335 code, replaced the crankshaft position sensor, no difference. Determined the sensor is getting a good ground but no power and replaced the relay that fed it, no difference. Determined there is 12V going to the primary of the relay, and the ECM is supposed to ground the other side of the primary coil to trip it. Well it is getting the 12V but the ECM is not giving it the ground, traced it all the way back to pin 4 on the ECU and pin 4 is not getting grounded when the car is on.

It seems to me that I might be looking at a bad ECM. Any othe rguesses?

Is the security light constantly on? You may have accidentally tripped NATS. Hopefully, you didn't leave the door open while attempting to start it.

So the Security LED does not come on when I first crank it, but after cranking for a few seconds it does come on solid. Does that mean I am immobilized?

Thanks- I am aware of the two sensors- my understanding is that P1335 is for the one near the balancer at the front of the engine, and that P0335 is for the one near the flywheel. That procedure you linked me to was in the 5th gen forum- am I right that 99's are special and have to be recoded? (I did try that procedure to no avail)

If you are getting the P0335 code, I don't think the NATS security system is the problem. A quick check of the NATS would be to spray some highly flammable fluid (such as starting fluid, brake cleaner, propane) into the throttle opening while cranking the engine over. If the engine catches and tries to run, then NATS is your problem.

P0335 has not interrelationship with NATS. It is its own problem. I would suggest that you follow the FSM for this - http://boredmder.com/FSMs/Nissan/Maxima/1999/EC.pdf

The P0335 stuff starts on page 304. Troubleshooting starts on page 307 but read the stuff before that. Also, the test on page 310 is a good one.

If it's not NATS, possibly the cam position sensor on the passenger side of the motor (up near top)? I had a hard start issue and it kicked out the CPS code on mine.

Three things I had going on. Constant P0301 (#1 Misfire), P1320 (Ignition Fault) which turned into a good cranking with not starting. Tried everything, and would start if it was given a shot of starting fluid in intake. Ran great and normal once started and would run all day. Total FIX was a FAULTY IGNITION SWITCH!! Here's why: With ignition Switch in START POSITION, the switch has 2 leads it fires---One for Starter Motor--Two FIRES Fuel Injectors. After Car starts, and is running, Computer then takes over and fires fuel injectors. So the reason car would not start is because it did not get fuel to ignite. Left my MIL codes alone and after driving for a few days they went away and never came back. No Start fixed......Misfire Fixed.......Ignition Fault Fixed.

Starter is just spinning? It might be backing out.. was happening to my brother’s 3.5 swap but he was getting a cough every now and then. Ended up being the starter.

Take it from me, if it's a 99, and the security light is on solid when you turn the key, it's the immobilizer, even if a code is popping up. No amount of swapping parts will fix it.
Call a locksmith, one familiar with reprogramming chipped keys. Be sure to tell him/ her that you have a 99 Maxima and that they are notorious for this issue. They will have to reprogram the key and probably the computer in the car (at least my locksmith did,) Cost about $200-$250 or so. Good luck

ECM/ECU can be a problem with starting

Try swapping out the ECU/ECM with one from the junk yard. It saved me trouble on 2 occasions when my car couldn't start after I already replaced other parts like fuel pump and ignitions parts.
