Going to grab this 99 Max Friday for $400...
According to seller it runs but really rough and has a persistent gas smell that she doesn't want to drive any more with her infant daughter in the car.
Considering what she says she's already done to it (and what her mechanic guesses) I'd say bad fuel injector open coil, leaking gas into cylinder. Any other suggestions/ ideas?

Miles? No Key and most likely Key Fob? That's more than a hassle. Convenient if it's worse than they're saying as you won't know until you BOUGHT it. All used cars sold privately are "as is".
Got a dolly and a truck to pull it with?
If you plan on keeping it, do all 6 Fuel Injectors and Grommets and top (under cap) insulator cushions. And a JIS #2 philips screwdriver to make getting the screws out without destroying them. Might as well do the fuel hoses and clamps too as well as the FPR (Intermotor)
I used this guy for a set of 6 flow matched rebuilt JECS original OEM injectors as used in 97 to 99.Maximas. https://www.motormanfuelinjection.co...01/5376315.htm He had a special for us in the Promo Code area, put: Maxima.Org
Hope this helps!

Anyway I was mainly asking if anyone had any other ideas what this might be besides an open coil on one or more fuel injectors- that's just a guess and I never messed with the injectors when I had my old 99 (never needed it.) If that's what it sounds like to everyone I'll go with that theory. The JIS #2 philips screwdriver is for getting the injectors out? I probably have one in my tool kit.
That linked site seems like a very good deal for the new injectors however I notice the chart only mentions 96-98 Maximas not 99s- would it still be the 2988cc injector? Thx

Oh and yes I have a neighbor with a truck and dolly to get it back to my house, he's passing through there in a couple weeks so if I bought the car he'd haul it back for me if I split the gas with him.

Last year I had the fuel line randomly start leaking when I hadn't touched it in a year. Was a loose clamp at the injector rail, could smell it in the car, I thought it was the oring for the fuel pump

After 20 years, if it is a fuel injector dumping gas problem, I'd say the highest probability is on a pintle cap coming off. The rest ain't far behind.
Here's the link for the set of six flow matched Injectors. Use MAXIMA.ORG in the promo code area for an almost 11% discount. https://www.motormanfuelinjection.co...ssan/5G60.html
If you have any questions, call Rob. This is all he does.
eBay has original 4th Gen OEM key FOBs for $49.95 shipped NEW. Programming without the original means paying someone setup to do so. Make sure the Key they make for you is the "Master" key that unlocks ALL locks, including the trunk. Car came with 2 different keys, so if you valet park, they can't get into the trunk if you change the trunk latch lever inside and using the non master key.

It should, this is one I bought a year and a half ago and it's been working fine, although you perhaps have to press the buttons a bit longer than actual OEM. The chart on this page says 95-99 Maxima and I30 compatibility. And then you just find the instructions to get your car to program it yourself.

Here is the Brand New Nissan OEM eBay offering: https://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-OEM-199...!US!-1&vxp=mtr
It will work on both 4th Gen Maximas and the corresponding I30s.
If you prefer the Infinity version, do a google search for: Infinity 28268-40U15
The only difference is one has the Nissan Logo and the other has the Infinity Logo by the key ring end. Infinity OEM FOBs are harder to find new with a comparable price.
Good luck!

FOB does not really fix my issue of having no actual key... Anyway I had to pass on that car, the master key was INDEED way more than $100 to have made just as I thought. And I'm not gonna pay that just to get a key made JUST to find out whether the car is worth buying.
Too bad it's otherwise apparently in decent shape and may be a relatively easy fix, but it's probably going to wind up at the crusher.

It's been in an accident anyway. Front end has had work. Better off looking for a virgin car at that age.

Might be the original front end, but man, it's way off! And straightening up front end lines is a forever pain in the ***. Big pet peeve for me anyway. I'm ok with a blown engine as long as the body is arrow straight. Even fender bender damage can turn into a nightmare when you spend years tracking down an electrical issue that you eventually discover to be a pinched wire in some impossible nook or cranny from the minor, non-Carfaxable, undisclosed collision. Jesus christ in a cardigan, I have been there and done that and traumatized by it in a body shop as my first high school summer job and I didn't even want to deal with it while getting paid! Sorry for the rant! Front end was the first thing I saw, and will always be the first thing I look at!

I really resent when people distort facts to slant the discussion to justify their preferences.
The ebay link I provided above had BRAND NEW OEM Nissan key FOBs for $50 shipped and someone here already bought one and programmed it first try. 20 years of life expected. Probably raised the price after tey started selling
You wanna be cheap? Go for it, but don't distort real facts to get us to validate your approach. We've just seen how well that approach works. Many of us prefer to pay the RIGHT price and be done with it.

How many did you buy that you can validate that? If it's many, they didn't work for long.

And all your point is based on once?
I'll ignore them from now on. You can build a reputation over time and ruin it with one post. You might want to think that through in future forums.

Here is the link. https://www.ebay.com/itm/293040823427?ul_noapp=true I bought 2 of them. They work great and I am sure they will out last my car. I bought a used one before but, of course, it soon wore out.

get real man, it's a frickin remote. i'm going to ruin my rep in here over saying what another member told me years ago to do and buy it used. and yeah, it was 20.00 with shipping, so 25.00.
#22
People come here looking for GOOD information to fix their issues at the RIGHT price. Anything less is a problem I won't accept. Millennial reasoning included.

Me and maxride don't get along because he's a millenial... however on this ONE thing I absolutely WILL agree with him. There is no way in hell I'd ever pay $50+ for a damn keyless entry remote. That's so over the top pricing I'd be ashamed to hit the submit order button.
When i bought that 2001 Infiniti that I only had for like a month due to unsolvable suspension problems it didn't come with the remote- I ordered this set brand new off amazon:
I got TWO of them for chump change and they both worked perfectly the first time I programmed them.
On SOME things I'll agree OEM parts (and pricing) is the way to go. On a damn key fob remote?? No freaking way.
