For some reason i can't go over 120 i use 93 octange Mobil
and also i have a automagic and i also have mods just look down and u will see the list

i got a 96 GLE and i max at 140+ hehe..

If you just leave it in D and go for it, it doesnt shift from 3rd to 4th gear at redline, it usually shifts around 6000. This puts you in 4th gear at too low of an RPM for optimal acceleration. What you need to do is turn OD off until redline in 3rd gear (this is the moment captured in my sig pic). This will be just about 130mph. Then turn OD on and you will end up at a higher RPM in 4th, and you should keep going...

and i have had that problem, i coudnt go past 120. But then one night when it was mad cold in NJ, i was at 120 on the parkway, and at 120 it just wouldnt go any faster, so i kept on punching it to the floor kinda fast and it just kept on going and going i think i hit 125 then tolls came up..youll get it you just need a lot of room thats the essential part. peace good luck.

I have a 97 GLE auto and the highest I hit was 118-120 too.

Can you explain the whole drive and overdrive thing to get that high. I have an oil leak that I believe was caused by tring to top out too much. timing cover oil leak....fix $1200 from dealer...so just in case i'd recommend you guys not doing it that often....

I highly doubt your timing cover leak has anything to do with high speed driving.

When going for top speed, 3rd gear (OD off) is good from 80 - 130mph. Once you get to redline in 3rd gear, switch OD back on.

If you have a GLE, you dont have a limiter. Believe me, when you hit the limiter in a GXE, there is NO question about what just happened.

on the way home from a crazy weekend in Montreal, I made it across the state oof vermont in 45 minutes. I regularly get aroun 130, no problem. I got a 5-speed, is that the difference?

Yep. 5th gear for you is way shorter than our 4th gear. Your top gear only goes to 158 or so mph. Our 4th gear (if there was enough power) would run all the way to 185mph....much taller.

So our super tall 4th gear makes those last few mph a real fight.

anyways i'm going to make this one short..
i hint 130mph on friday going to hunts point in my 95 gle. the car shifted at about 120mph into 4th.(i didn't think it was going to take so long for the car to shift.) after it shifted it seamed like forever to get 130mph. i also want to hear from NISMOPower about his oil leak. i think the top speed run did cause his problem to start.
NISMOPower did you fix the leak anf how did you know you had one?
i'm mad because my friend hit 142mph in his gsr with 3 guys in the car.

Well anywayz guys so wut do u think is keeping us go beyound this speed ? I thought we could go 140 easy but i guss some peeps have some prob ....... maybe it's the autmagic ? or maybe we don't have good compression in our engine ? dont know...... if anyone figure it out hit us up with a reply thanks all for your input..... your real input :D

Like I said anything after 130 comes up real slow. That gear is so tall that any tiny uphill grade or tiny headwind will just shut you down at 130. Try a different road under different conditions. You never know what you'll get...


And I believe AnzStevie got 140...I've done it once or twice, but usually cant get above 135 or so.

i'll try take a picture next time when i go see my g/f down in houston. there is this place where the middle part is cut off and there are bunch of trees so the police can't stop there and it's a long strip.

i'm going to say most likely the high speed attempt definatly gave you the oil leak. high RPMS mean high pressure, easy to blow a gasket or seal loose enough to leak a little. its happened to me a few times before. Jeeps are notorious for it, and its not cuz they are junk, just that the engines arent built to rev too high, past a certain point, its like oil-leak-city :laugh: i hit 130 in my auto 95 SE, but thats it, i hesitated pushing it any farther, its like asking for an oil leak with 163,000 miles.

Yeah, but top speed in a 4th gen auto is at about 4800 RPM in 4th gear...is that high revs?

never did more than 115...i just get scared when i go more than that...where do you guys get to go over 120 anyway without getting stopped by cops???

Long time ago, back in 1997 when the car was pretty new I got it all the way up to 137mph, all stock.

Now, 4.5 years later, that my car is grimey inside and dirty and I've turned into a chicken and the highest I get up to now is 130mph. Just not enough space. Plus I don't want to end up in jail.

Good luck with your speed attempts.

Remember, leave OD on until 110mph, so it will allow the torque converter to do its business, and then switch it to off so that it won't autoshift to 4th at 115mph. Pull 3rd to about 127-130mph and then switch it back to OD on, and you should be able to pull to about 133 pretty quickly, and the rest is gonna take at least another 3 miles to achieve.

on the highway.. just bring out about 5 other cars with you and your chances of getting caught are pretty slim.. also do it really late at night.

i guess our cars are getting old..... maybe our compression is down hmmmm....

OH and guys about the overdrive thing it's not good for your trans while your driving/racing and puting your overdrive on and off cuz i had my trans droped (couldnt go reverse) and had to get it rebuilt they told me that my overdrive was fryed and other things that was worn out

Stock, I could get my 95 GLE up to 125 on a smoothe road. I disconnected the intake resonator under the battery and got it up to 128 on the same stretch. Haven't had a chance to push it to the limit since I got my cone filter, but I doubt it will make any difference. I use 89 octane Texaco or Chevron.

The only thing the OD switch does is lock out 4th gear. Your mechanic was BSing you.

And no our transmissions are NOT built by ford they are built by JATCO in Japan. Get your facts right before you come here to scare people.

I know medicsonic has hit 140 and he has a GLE.

Another thing to keep in mind is wheel/tire size. Not too many people still have the original. It can make a large diference in your speedo error. I am using 225 vs the 215 original tire size and speedo error with that is almost 2% and with wheel changes etc it can make a large diference. Also I don't think I would bet my life on the accuracy of a factory speedo. There can be huge diferences at that high a speed. Speedo's are for comparison purposes on the same vehicle only, but thats from my experience others will differ.

The SE model does not have the limiter... I hit 150mph in my 97 SE

Before I did any mods to my car... it struggled to get up to 130 and 140.. after the mods, it was on!

ME AND MY G/F WERE ON THE WAY TO LAKE GEORGE IN JANUARY FOR THE WEEKEND, WE HIT 140+ ON THE NY THRUWAY.
GOT LITTLE NERVOUS BUT THATS OK.

I'm dead serious the tech guy told me it is a ford trans he even showed it to me in the manual that they use ford trans for nissan trans cars

What ford model is it?
