95 5speed tranny w/o lock diff vs 96 5speed w/lock diff

i have a 95 max 5speed (build date 10/95),and i need a new tranny, i had a 96 5speed tranny all lined up, but that fell through , but i see another tranny, its for a 96-97 infiniti I30 5speed w/locking diff, however my maxima has a non-locking diff. Will the I30 tranny work in my maxima even if my max did not originally come w/locking diff.

TIA, P.S. if anyone knows of anyone selling a 5speed for relatively cheap, let me know, i will also post in the WTB/FS forum. Thanks again

hey im in the middle of swapping a vlsd tranny into my car ("locking diff") and ill tell u, you will need new axles and they are hard to find. i have two trannies that need rebuilds, a 96 that needs bearings and a 98 that needs 3rd gear, if you want either one to install a quaife in and rebuild ill let them go for cheap, let me know

Just wondering what kind of failure your transmission experienced.

well, my car has 144,000 miles just to start things off, i bought the car in april of last year for a very low price (poor college student). So about 3 weeks ago i started to hear a wierd grinding noise up front, (i also had both my drive axles replaced/rebuilt about 1 week before the noises started due to failed cv joints.) I then took the car back to the shop where i had the work done, and they said that the tranny has a small leak and that the noise is coming from inside the tranny, and it had nothing to do with the axles. They told me that they could not be sure of exactly what the problem was w/o dropping the tranny, but they said it sounds like either the bearings are gone, or that they may have fallen back into the tranny. The noises happen first thing in the morning when the car is cold (Binghamton,NY), and when my foot is off of the clutch, when i put my foot on the clutch the noise seems to disengage along with the gears. In either case they said it would just be easier to rebuild the tranny or get a used one in proper working order. Before I had his extensive work done I wanted to get a second opinion. So I went to my local Nissan dealership and they told me the same thing. That’s why I have just decided to replace the whole transmission.
