I just received my Haynes Repair Manual for the Maxima. I feel like Dr. Frankenstein already. There are so many things listed in here. Reading the manual shows you just how easy it is to work on your Max. My car was bought with 90,000 miles on it, off lease as a fleet vehicle. I was lucky enough to have service records from a Nissan dealer in NJ for the life of the car. So I feel pretty confident. But for other Max owners out the get yourself a repair manual. You'd never know most of the stuff need to do routine maintenance can be done all by yourself with the proper tools and materials. Now I've gotta to go do some more reading, gonna change my brake pads tomorrow and rewire my fogs.

Haynes manual....

I bought one when they were first released to go with my 1996 factory shop manual.
Haynes recently released the second edition of their manual.
Mine covers 1992 to 1998. The new eddition adds 1999 I believe. I wonder why they included both 3rd and 4th gen Maxima's in the same book. Kind of confuses matters in some sections.

Yeah it does in some cases get you a little confused. But you must admit that its still a great help.

Last year I wrote and posted on the forum a comparison of the 96 FSM to the Haynes where it concerned 4th gens. The Haynes does not include the BMC (Body Control Module) section that is used to diagnose with codes and work on the power windows, locks, alarm system and some other stuff. I don't have my notes here at work but seem to recall Haynes cuts corners in the Automatic Trans repair section and a couple of other areas the typical owner/do-it yourselfer probably wouldn't get into. But for the majority of maintenance, repairs and troubleshooting it's fine. It also leaves out much of the wiring diagrams included in the FSM but does give you the schematic (sp) diagrams.

Mark lose the slush box, get a manual. Theres no substitute for the control you can have over your car.

Yeah, I agree with you on the car control. I've owned several sticks in the past and took a 2K 5spd SE/17" wheels for a test drive, to get the free Swiss Army watch Nissan was giving away for test driving, and really liked it. But I drive this Maxima mostly in the city and dicided to go with the automatic and haven't really regreted it so far. Maybe next time. I bought this Maxima new in Nov 95 and so far have put only 22,000 miles on it, so it may be awhile yet.
