Got my Y & B pipe and holy sh!t batman, it's loud!!

OK, I got the Y & B pipe from Stillen with an aftermarket muffler and it is just way too loud. Is it because of the muffler? It's a Toucan Ractiv muffler. If I go back to my stock muffler will it quiet it down any? Any other suggestions on mufflers? It sounds OK and all the guys at the shop that installed the pipes thought it sounded good, but I just can't handle the drone from inside the car.

Loud, Huh?? It's cool for a while, but gets old real quick IMO. Just slap on your stock exhaust and you should be fine without loosing any (maybe 1-3 hp max). If you want the sporty look, just put on a tip!

Go back stock-a lot less noise. I have a y and stock muffler , sounds about the same. A tad louder. :)

Yup.

nismo2020 Apr 2, 2002 11:42 AM

true, but who in the hell wants to ride around with an ugly factory muffler?

1MAX2NV Apr 2, 2002 11:51 AM

It's the b-pipe.

I think my stock muffler had a chrome tip. I'll have to call the shop and see if they still have it. I'm not real crazy about the "almost coffee can size" muffler that's on there now.

Do you think those shiney round mufflers actually look good?

Go back to the stock muffler, but continue to use the Y and B pipe. Your car will be much quieter (~20% louder than stock) and you won't loose any performance. Since you've got the Stillen B-pipe, you'll need to get a resonated tip. Believe, a simple mod like a resonated muffler tip goes a long way in improving the sound quality by removing much of the raspiness of a y-pipe and resonatorless Stillen B-pipe (I have both). I've got a subtle 3.25" resonated stainless tip which is just big enough. You may also want to paint your stock muffler a flat black. It goes a long way in improving the looks of the rear.

You mean it's the B pipe that's making it loud? Anything I can do short of taking it off? I'm gonna try a different muffler and see how it goes first.

dwapenyi Apr 2, 2002 11:57 AM

I've been thinking about a B-pipe but don't want the noise. Right now I've got just a Y with everything else stock on the exhaust. THe only noise I'm hearing is my intake. If I go B pipe, will the world change??

I hope to also add a 2K or 2K1 muffler.

I had a giant canister exhaut on my celica but I switched to a stock looking custom exhaust cuz every riced out honda on the street tried to race me.

racing on public roads with people around == stupid IMO

Thanks, Dave, I'm going to try to get my stock muffler back and find a resonated muffler tip.

I may suggest a 2000 or newr muffler from a Maxima as well. Looks nice, sounds nice (not loud at all). Then you get a different look and get to gain some power anyhow.

I was suprised as heck when I picked my car up after having the exhaust put on. I cranked it up and was like OMG it is way too loud. That's been a couple of weeks ago and I've kinda gotten used to it, but now every Honda and Mustang in town wants to race. I'm just trying to get home after work and they want to race down I10 during rush hour traffic!! Last nite this Mustang was trying to race me. There was traffic in my lane; his lane was clear but he stayed right next to me. I'm thinking, WTF there's too much traffic little boy, go home!!

Dave, do you have a pic of your muffler?

chris j vurnis Apr 2, 2002 10:39 PM

Hello:

I can honestly say "Been there done that" with regards to the low frequency drone from 2000-3000rpms --
Its ALL in the muffler.

I had a local race shop fabricate a new muffler for me using some generic name "high flow" muffler.
High flow doesn't need to be loud or with a lot of drone.
Its all in the shape of the sound chamber of the muffler that makes drone.

dwapenyi Apr 3, 2002 06:46 AM

So, if I add a B pipe to my Y pipe, but keep the stock muffler, or put on a 5th gen muffler, the car won't drone?? I do not want that damn drone! I learned my lesson about tuned exhausts for sound on an 86 Mustang 5.0 I always loved the exhaust note, but after a 7 hour road trip in one, and being exposed to that exhaust note **all** **the** **time**, I decided I could live without it:)

That is the same thing I am doing. From what I have heard it is pretty quiet.

I have a shiny round muffler.

But I painted everything black except the tip, I was not a fan of the shiny "hey look at me" muffler look.

Yup, you can mod the hell out of your exhaust system but keep your muffler stock and you won't loose any power!

Will do but it might take a few weeks. I am waiting on somone to send the muffler to warpspeed then they are making a Bpipe and changing the muffler aound to fit the 4th gen pipe. From there I will have to get it shipped back to me and install it. But I will post to let you know when I get it on.
