what's a popcharger?

what is a popcharger?

teraspeed Apr 2, 2002 07:13 PM

It's the thing that puts bubbles and fiz in your softdrinks. Popcharger. :D

Sorry, couldn't help it. It's basically a conical shaped performance air filter.

It's basically a fancy name for the Stillen or Jim Wolf Technologies (JWT) intake.

anybody know why it's called a popcharger?

jwt is a rip - why spend 120 when u can get the exact same thing for about 40

I'm planning on getting a K&N filter at autozone and get the adapter i see on ebay... would this work? ANd I see a lot of people saying that the car will lose low end,, is this meaing worse then stock or just no improvement over stock?

Low end torque. It means your car will pull harder in lower RPMs. Most air intake though will give you high end torque. Do a SEARCH, this topic has been answered MANY times!:p

I belive the term pop charger is owned by JWT, but it kind of gets applied to all underhood intakes. The difference between the JWT Pop charger and a cone filter is the JWT pop has a Velocity Stack. A Velocity Stack is kind of a horn shape that is supposed to smooth the flow of air and increase the amount of air taken in. I would guess the term pop charger has something to do with the velocity stack. Why this velocity stack increases the price by almost $100 over a cone filter :gotme:

'Low End' means power in the lower RPM ranges, there is much debate about this but the general cosensus seems to be that automatics will feel a low end loss, but 5 speeds will not notice it as much.

Edit - BTW here is JWTs Pop charger page, the ring in the pic at the upper left is the velocity stack.

I believe you have been mis-informed.

Low-end is only torque(idle to 3500 RPM0. Top-end is horsepower(3500 to red). If you get the Popcharger you will gain a few lb/ft of torque but it will feel like you "lost" power because of the significant gains in horsepower in the upper RPM band.

If you want more Torque get a CAI.

Kirk

DO A SEARCH!

You are so wrong!

Horsepower is merely a mathematical product of torque. The only thing that can be directly measured from an engine is torque. HP is (torque x RPM) / 5252.

That's all. There is no range of engine speeds for one or the other.

Geez, how many times does this have ot be re-hashed??

I thought POP was for Ported Out and Polished, referring to the velocity stack. I think charger was coined since the velocity stack is supposed to (physics beyond the scope of this text) allow more air into the engine. All things equal of course. Do a search, there is a ton of info. on the various intakes for our cars along w/ pros and cons. I personally have the Stealin POP but if I were in the intake market again I'd probably get the Warpspeed Productions Cold Air Intake (WSP CAI):D

clee130 Apr 3, 2002 03:22 PM

Get a hybrid!

Popcharger + CAI upper piece

Best of both worlds

Craig Mack Apr 3, 2002 04:00 PM

Popcharger? Should be called lagcharger...bottom line is if you are automatic than you will lose torque off the line and you will definatally feel the lag with every "bum bum bum" sound the filter makes.

Ask Clee, he will 100% agree that a cold air intake owns and beats the cone intake like a red-headed stepchild. :p

So....every single dyno ever done is inaccurate?

I guess this needs "ot" be re-hashed until there is a clear consensus for one side or the other :D
