Starter Don't know which one to buy....
OK i need a starter in the next few days. I went to Pepboys and they are selling one for $168 rebuilt called Prostart. with lifetime warranty. Then my dad goes and says something about Pepboys are gonna go out of business anyone know of this??? Well I don't know how much factory is yet. I talked to Matthel aka Turbo95Max and he said if I go buy a aftermarket i should buy a really name brand like Bosch or something. Is rebuilt starts any good? Thanks

Thanks Chris 1) Buy new. 2) Or if you can't afford it(Nissan OEM prices would probably be heinous)... Take the old starter to a local place that rebuilds starters and alternators for a living and have them do the work. Starters and alternators are really, really simple with few things that wear and break. Any idiot with the right tools and replacement bearings/bushings/solenoids could make yours better than new.... Or if all else fails go the rebuilt - autozone route... But I've had miserable luck many times. Hit or miss.... -RMB |
In addition to what RMB said >>
You can go here, or give them a call, they should give you a price. Ask about warrantees and the different manufacturers.

What symptoms do you have that your starter is going? That noise that sounds like a duck screaming?
I recently re-lubricated mine. Just follow the directions from Motorvate's site here; http://www.motorvate.ca/auto/maxima/starter/starter.htm Total cost: $5 for lithium grease, and 45 minutes of my own labor getting at the starter. If you do decide to go this route, take note to not tighten the starter bolts like crazy. I tightened mine to just over hand tight with a ratchet. That's it. Been great for 2 months so far. My starter's as good as new now:) DW |
Heres what i did
My starter completely went kaput one day. I had this same dilemma.
1) Get a new starter from nissan. cost 400 with install. 2) Get a rebuilt starter from pep boys. cost 200 give or take. 3) Take starter to a starter repair shop. I went with #3, i figured, theres no way i am gonna pay 400 dollars for a new starter when i can get a rebuilt one 2 times. Then i figured theres no way i am gonna get a rebuilt one if i can just have mine rebuilt for 1/5th the price of a used one. I mean, whats the point of buying a different rebuilt one, once i got mine repaired, it worked absolutely perfectly. I did try the regrease, it helped, but eventually the solenoid went bad as well as the brushes. |

Just had to replace my starter today and found one in a junkyard for $75. That could be option #4... |

I took the starter out and tested it at autozone for free along with my battery and they said starter was bad. I decided tp buy a rebuilt starter from Pepboys with the lifetime warranty for $168.

anytime the starter doesn't work or something doesn't work with it then I just bring it to Pepboys with the receipt and get a new one.

pep boys, auto zone etc are usually pretty good with their lifetime warranties. thats the way id go too :D

FWIW, one reason NOT to have an old one rebuilt at a starter shop; early 4th gen starters had problems and the newer 4th gens had re-designed starters with one more gear tooth on the bendix. |
