Went to the 1/8th mile track for 1st time

Last night I raced my car at the eigth mile track for the first time and i must say i was a little disapointed My best time time was 9.73@74.44 I consistently had 2.2-2.3 60ft. I removed trunk carpet/spare/jack/rear seat/pass.seat. I expected about 9.5's avg.. My rims I put on are 6lbs heavier than stock do you think this would make much difference, maybe my car needs a tune up? I think with that 1/8 mile it equates to about 15.2 1/4

I ran a 9.72@72.251 with a 2.2 60', 1/4 time was 15.14@91.023 Your trap was good, 2mph faster than mine.

Yeah it's not that your wheels wheigh more, it is that they are larger than diameter that would slow you down. My best runs stock are 9.8 in the 1/8 and 15.3 in the 1/4(it was relly hot and humid I think I could have at least run 15.1-15.0). Speeds where 72 and 92? respectivly(I don't have my slips so that last number could be a little off.

The first time my car ran in the 1/8th it ran 10.17 @78 this is what the sign said, 78 sounds a little fast to me. Last night I ran my car on the 1/4 for the first time my best time was 15.824 @89.89 this was the first time I raced my car so I'm still working on the launch. Some one please tell me if 78 sounds right. Thanks,
Ryan

Nah man thats not right. My best runs are 9.8-9.9, and it is around 70-72mph. They can mess up sometimes 'cause I had a 9.6 one time and I KNOW that was noy right though it would be nice if it was.

Thats kind of what I figured but hey it was worth looking at for the time being.I just want to be busting into the 9s next time I go.

Hey man with your mods you should be running at least a tenth better than me. Are you getting any ECU codes?

NO just shi*y traction. My car is acting a little strange though it seems to have jumpy acceleration when i'm not wot, it threw a rear heated O2 code but I replaced the sensor and nothing has come up since. Do I need to go ahead a reset the computer though?

Yeah go ahead and reset it. I have the exact same problem, but I am getting a knock sensor code. It doesn't affect my performance at the track(Idon't think I am running decent times). But yeah I get erradic hesitation if I am driving normaly. I haven't had the money to replace the sensor yet but I also heard a bad O2 sensor can trigger a knock sensor code, so before I change it I am going to test the ohms of my O2 sensors, and at 54k I need to change my fuel filter(every 15k), clean my TB, and change my plugs.

Yeah I had my fuel filter changed and had my plugs changed at around 75,000 my car now has 92k and I need to replace the rest of the O2s but the dang things cost to much. The only code my car has ever thrown was 0707 which is the rear heated O2. I reset the computer about 2 weeks before I actually replaced the O2 so when I replaced it the light was still off. But I'll go and reset the computer here in a little bit.

In my stock 1995 Maxima SE 5-spd I'm running 9.8@72mph and 15.1@92mph. My 60' times are 2.3 consistently and I have a LOT of traction problems off the start. I sometimes wheelhop and even slide sideways before I grab! I have all stock street tires too and stock suspension.

I wonder if GC coilovers or Eibach springs would fix that up... wonder which would be better?

Are you a stick or auto, you have the exact same setup that i'm working at getting now. I'll probably be getting my y pipe sooner than later. Was there much of a difference in speed, sound and feel, from when you put on your y pipe after having the intake on.

you may want to try playing with your tire pressures. Varying your launch RPM, staging, etc... may also make a difference.

I'm assuming your rims are heavier than stock because you have larger diameter rims and tires? If so, it's not so much the weight as the change in gearing relative to the larger tires that is hurting your acceleration. You may want to try 15" rims to see if that makes a difference.

And last, a tune up, fresh plugs, etc... never hurt anyone's performance.

Hope this helps,

Its not possible to trap 78mph with your setup. Maybe it said 73? given your 1/4 mile time and speed, I'd say your 1/8th trap would be right around 69-70mph... what does your 15.824 @ 89.89 slip say for your 1/8th speed?

I've got some of the meanest low end punch you will find in an NA 4th gen, I trap 76.5 typically. Almost 77 on occasion.

CASS98SE-

I dug up some old slips of mine from ~2 years ago when I first started drag racing my Maxima. When I'd run 9.7s@74mph I was looking at 15.0-15.1@94mph slips. It look like your Maxima has some pretty good topend because of your 74mph 1/8th miles. What was the weather like? When the air gets above 80 and is humid, my performance drops a couple tenths and mphs.

Work on your driving if anything. It took me a solid year of different techiques to get my car to run the way it does now. In 70 and below degree weather, I'm consistently hitting 9.4s@77mph in the 1/8th which is equates to 14.6s@96-97mph or so. My 60 foots still are killing me (high 2.2s) and I think it's more the launch pad than my driving though because I always out 60' any other street-tired FWD at the track plus many RWD muscle cars. I will be using drag tires next year.

Dave-
The temp was 85, with high humidity that probably hurt me .1-.2 i guess. I may have been shifting 200 rpm or so early too.. Do you think if i put 15 inchers on with some drag radials it would help a lot?? thanks

Sounds the like the weather wasn't particularly good. It does hurt your times and mph. You should shift at:

1-2 6500
2-3 6200
3-4 6000

Drag radials on the stock 15s will do wonders.
