Insurance doesn't cover engine mods

I have full coverage through Farmer's Insurance. Now I'm getting all of my aftermarket stuff insured (audio equipment, HIDs, wheels). Unfortunately, they don't cover engine modifications (SC, BOV, etc). I didn't check on stuff like Y-pipe or exhaust, but I'm guessing they count as engine modifications.

Farmer's Insurance is one of the big providers, so if they don't cover engine mods, I'm sure most of the others won't either. Anyone want to prove me wrong?

What I'm worried about is someone stealing my car, going for a joyride and destroying the SC. If that happens, it isn't covered by insurance!

For an extra charge, you might be able to add a rider to the policy to cover mods.

Yeah that's what I'm doing, but it only covers electronics and structural modifications, no engine modifications. That means SCs, tranny work, intakes, possibly Y-pipe and exhausts, are not covered by insurance.

See if they offer full replacement value...State Farm does and as long as you can document your purchases, you are straight.

Yeah, or lets say your SC gets stolen...buh bye.

If you tell your insurance company what extra $$'s you're putting into your car, they should be willing to cover it...of course for an added fee.

No one wins the battle with insurance companies...sure, you have your victories, but in the end they got ya by the nutz.

could home owners insurance cover stuff like that?

insurance claims

It's been years since I've tried to get money from my insurance company so pardon my ignorance. But can't you simply say that the add-ons were stolen along with your car (rather than being part of your car)? Like if you had your wallet in the car when it was stolen.

If your wallet was in the car and it was stolen, tough cookies. I had my sun glasses ripped off along with my stereo. They replace the stereo, not the glasses. The glasses come under home owners insurance, and that's a whole nother story. Good luck adding your super charger to your home owners...but hey, it's worth a try.

Home owners insurance will cover everything and then some! :)

As long as it gets stolen or vandalized on your property. :wall:

What if you don't own a home, but have Renter's Insurance? Does that work to cover possessions in the car too?

You got that right, SC installs cost a lot! I'm going to check into the home owners policy thing to see if it will cover personal affects in the car.

I used to have renter's insurance, and that policy covered stuff in my car, storage places, etc. I'll check to see if renter's insurance will cover the SC and other items in the car. It's only $150 a year.

Keep me posted, because I plan to install the SC in about a year or so. And I would like to know if the SC can be covered.. I'm :ghost:
