it doesnt stand for anything. it just sounds nice. if they stood for something, what do you think GXE would stand for? or ES? or IS? or SL? or CLK? they all just sound nice.

thats what i always figured it meant until just recently. it sound right. someone posted a while ago that they talked to nissan north america about what they stand for and they were told it stood for Standard Equipement for insurance reasons. because your premiums would be higher for a "sports edition" car than a "standard equipment" car. but besides this i dont think any of them stand for anything at all.

I always just assumed that SE stood for Sports Edition.

Im not sure on this one but how would a SC only engage at WOT? That would mean that there would have to be a bypass around the SC for the intake when not in use. Or that the belt to power the SC is pulled away from the SC unless at WOT. I just dont think that a SC can only engage at WOT. Any info would be apreciated to set the record strait.

CO2kmax 09-15-2002 10:32 PM

Sorry I forgot something. The SC extera probably does not have a BOV it probably just recycles the extra back pressure into the intake, that is how the 1.8t jetta are set up. So u won't here a big diff between the SC and the NA extera, except for mabey a slight whine. 18 wheelers have 6cyl turbos, when u here them going down the road u here the wine of the turbo but when they let off the gas u don't here the whoosh. The reason u don't is because they don't have a BOV. Just because something is TC or SC doesn't mean they have to have a BOV. BOV make TC and SC more efficient by releasing the backpresure that occurs when u let off of the throtle. Again I am not 100% sure on these facts, but I think I am close. Anybody please correct me if I am wrong, and I am not flamming I am just trying to help people have the correct facts and learn more about the topic.

Y2KevSE 09-15-2002 10:37 PM

As mentioned, the Xterra has a recirculation valve that routes the discharged air back to the intake. This is why you don't hear a BOV (woosh) sound.
