fuel filter? where is it?

Can anyone please tell me where the fuel filter is located on the 2000 Maxima. I just changed the plugs and air filter. Was hoping to tackle the fuel filter next. Last week while driving around Boston I heard some pre-detonation coming from the engine compartment. It was pretty loud. Has anyone else experienced this pinging?
Thanks fran

In the tank, so it's a don't touch item.

yea, we have one of those "maintenance free" ones that dont' need replacing.

keep in mind, you dig into that thing without doing the fuel pressure release, you and your car will stink of gas FOREVER...

the pinging you are experiencing might be resulting from faulty ignition coils. early 2000 seemed to be have problems with them lasting. if you have under 36k, you should take it to nissan for them to replace. if you have more then i would have someone hook up a diagnostic machine and see if its throwing a code. does you have a check engine light as of now?
