Don't sit in the G35 coupe...

Went to the SF Auto Show this past weekend and had the opportunity to sit in a silver G35 coupe. I wanted to trade in my '02 SE right then and there. Damn you Infiniti! If I would have just waited a year to buy a new car:banghead:

Well, isn't the G35 coupe significantly more expensive? Considering it's a new intro and there's high demand, they will be selling those for over MSRP, which will make the Maxima about $7000 cheaper (at least) than the G35 coupe (that diff. is the ACTUAL amount you can save, not based off sticker). $7000 is a lot of money in my opinion.

yes it is. but there's a trade-off. More horses, RWD, better performance, more luxurious, better service, etc., etc. I think it would have been well worth the extra $$.

g35 coupe vs. Z

the big issue w/ G35 coupe vs the 350Z. nissan is really slicing the market VERY tight here. the g35 is a legit competitor to the max + altima (even price is close to loaded max) and the g35 coupe looks, smells, and drives the same as the Z. interesting article in car-n-driver on how nissan is really taking a gamble since the g35 coupe will be selling just 2-3K more than the 350Z.

jbgoodmax Nov 27, 2002 12:39 PM

Trying to avoid that feeling

I have a 2001 AE, getting the mod itch again and/or 2002 6-sp. Sat in the coupe several weeks ago very nice. For all the money and time and warrenty issues I will face, I should just do it.

As far as price, the dealer here and most are doing MSRP which is a good thing, that's part of the reason the Max has poor resale value now.

A loaded max at invoice is about $26K -NAV

A G35C 6-sp leather goes from 32K - 35K -NAV

A G35c auto non leather ~29K

Hard to beat that, but we aren't comparing apples to apples here, many things that the G35C/G35S have are better FWD vs RWD ...

I think Nissan has their marketing all messed up. They're taking way too many chances with most of the new cars they're putting out. First it was the nearly-identically priced Maxima and Altima, and the Altima ended up eating away at Maxima's sales. Now it's the G35 coupe and the Z. For a company that's coming out of bankruptcy, these seem to be VERY risky moves.

My $.02

actually the G35 is priced comparable to the Z. The top of the line Z actually is a few Ks more than the G35. Their looks are similar, but in my opinion the G35 in a little classier. I've been in both and while the Z is nice the G35 interior is definitely a few notches above. As for performance:gotme:

I'm with you, on that

jbgoodmax Nov 27, 2002 01:02 PM

Maxima has been forced to ...

They have forced the Max to become higher priced, larger, ... just to seperate it's self, who in there right mind would pay big $$$ for a Max when the G35,Altima,I35 ... are less

They MUST make the Max a "super" lux sport sedan to justify the $$$ price diff (assuming the new Max is more than the current because of the Alt).

Truth or Dare Nissan, you should have redesigned the Max first and let the Altima follow, now the "flagship" may look like a follower, well done!!!

Actually i believe 02 Maxima sales were consistent with 01 if not more, i think the redesigned Altima got more folks into showrooms, however when some looked at the crappy interior of the Altima they went with the Max (myself included)

I no what you mean. I sat in one at the Tampa Auto Show. nice. Oh and the only reason for me getting the g35C over the Z is the back seat (small nontheless). i carry lots o sheit and need the extra room.

yup same thing happened to me i went with my friend to look at one for him and i ended up driving it and by the time we got back i was ready to sell my maxima and i still am.

TimW Nov 27, 2002 02:58 PM

well.. the first thing I thought when I sat in a G35 is how the tranny and drivetrain eats up so much interior room. I know thats the price of RWD car, but honestly, I'm just so used to the open feeling of the maxima. Plus, I dont like being so close to the doors. In a side impact, I like how much room the maxima gives. I mean comparatively. I'd drive a g35 in a second, but its those things that help me keep happy in my current car.

That was premeditated by Nissan in order to reposition both the 2K2 Altima and the 2004 Maxima. The latter of which I understand will be fullsized and on a RWD platform (with either 260hp+ VQ motor or a detuned M/Q45 V8) which will more than likely result in it being "up-priced" accordingly.

Why does everyone complain about Nissan producing new models that compete with other Nissan models. Nissan has to introduce new models, make old models better and take risks. Look at Ford they are struggling because they haven't taken risks with the Taurus or produced new models to get people into the show room. In the past people always said Nissan/Infiniti. Well fellas Nissan is getting away from that and giving there respective companies new products to get people talking and most importantly buying. With that being said platforms need to be shared to reduce cost.

The 350Z and G35c aren't carbon copies one has a back seat and more trunk space. The Z is Nissans halo-car were as the G35C is Infiniti's sport coupe targeted towards the BMW crowd and giving the G35 more credablity in it's class.

I went to the SF autoshow. I wasnt to impressed. I expectd to see more concept type cars. Nissan was ok but they could of had a much better set up and display of cars. Then Murano is ugly IMO but the interior is kinda nice and comfortable. I loved the G35 I know what you mean makes me want one to.

OMG ! My exact feelings ! I went to Infinity, and I would lose 6k by trading in my car for it..

Maxmann Nov 30, 2002 11:06 PM

...tested G35 coupe and sedan and looked at the I-35's. Ended up getting (for my wife) a Maxima GLE. The G-35 sedan felt too claustrophobic and bulky inside, not open and airy. Didn't care for it too much, which was a big disappointment. I wanted to be wowed by it, but wasn't. The coupe was a beast! Awesome and for some reason that doesn't make sense, the interior "felt" different. However, not a practical car when you may still need to transport adults...

I-35...do not like the way the Nav was designed into the dash...looks like and add-on. Otherwise, I still prefer the exterior of the Max, although the interior of the I-35 was dressed up just a bit more (real wood vs. fake).

So, ended up looking at Max's and got her a loaded up GLE!. Now we have "his and her" Maxima's in the garage, i.e., my 02 SE and now her 03 GLE! Since I was buying a Max...I definitely wanted an 03; don't think I'll be interested in the 04 based on what I read.

srm

My only beef with the G35 coupe is the Backseat, it's a death trap. I nearly broke my spine in half tyring to get out of the back of it....ouch! I was rather upset because I had a much easer time fitting on to the back of the RSX, surprise surprise.
The G35 is a killer though. But it "is" like 3 tenths of a second slower to 60 than the 350Z, mainly because of weight...and the formentioned back "shelf"

What's even more messed up is that nobody wants to buy I35's anymore.. they're just ignored! My dealer's got a pile of them sitting around on the lot.
