HID's question please help

Hello all,

I am just wondering if anyone has experienced this or if I am losing my mind. Lately I have been noticing that the color of my stock 02' HID's are losing there blueish color. They are starting to look like ordinary lights. Do you guy's know or have heard anything about this? Thanks Everyone.

njmaxseltd Dec 19, 2002 11:30 AM

Your just getting used to them.

Actually, I read somewhere that as HIDs burn you use up some of the "salts" or whatever and it tends to lose some of the bluer color.

May or may not be true, but most likely as njmaxseltd said, your just getting used to them.

Try finding someone else with a 2K2 for comparison sometime to see if they are the same. I swear other Maximas' HIDs look WAY bluer than mine, but that's probably because I'm always driving my car so I don't see it out on the street from that angle.

Can't say mine are changing color. Though I'm definately used to them. I drove my GF's car one night and was like "Holy cow these lights are yellow!" You don't realize it after a while.

Yea, if you have your stock fog lights pull up to a white wall. You'll see a difference. Mine actually are looking bluer on my white garage door but whiter on the street. I think after a while you just get use to them and take them for granted. I love my HIDs

So I went to Nissan last night for an oil change and told them about the lights. Just as I thought they looked at me like a deer in headlights. While in the garage I turned them on facing a black wall and they looked blue as could be. But on the street they look whiter. So I think I just got used to them. Thanks for the help guy's. Have a merry christmas and happy new year.

one thing though, is how i hate how bmw and especially audi lights are way bluer from an angle. oh well. i hear that ours actually produce more light though.

Funny, most people that I've heard about on the board when looking for fogs / sidemarkers / clearance complained they are too blue. Here we are complaining that our HIDs aren't blue enough! :)

Since we are on the subject of HID's, I read in the owner's manual that xenon headlights will not last as long if you turn them on and off too often (i.e. turning them off when at a stop light - which I never do). Exactly how long do these xenon lights last if used properly? if used not properly? How expensive are they to replace? I tend to take alot of short trips to different stores (errands) which requires me to turn my HID's on and off every time at different stops so does that mean my lights may not last as long as they could?

BTW, I think I have gotten used to the bluish color as well but when I drive my wife's car with the standard lights, its a big big difference.

Thanks,

Thanks,

as with any light bulb, life is cut short when you turn on and off. however, this isn't going to have a big effect on xenon lamps. xenons have a longer life than halogens, and will likely outlast the cars that they are in.

02MaximaSE Dec 20, 2002 07:15 AM

xenon lights should last around 3000 hours of usage. Compare to halogen lights which last anywhere from 350-1000 hours. Quick restarts of the xenons will lessen the life of them, and operating them for long periods of time with the engine off is bad for them also. Try not to leave them on for the auto feature to shut them off. Actually from brand new to mid life of xenon lights should yield bluer color, then as they begin to die they are reddish. Sodium salts and Xenon gas are burned, and when Xenon gas is low the sodium salts (yellowish greenish red) will glow through. Thats when you know you have to replace them. They're about $130 a piece.

The BMW's AUDI's etc. with Projector lights will have a rainbow effect at different angles produced by chromatic abberation. Its like a prism effect, how glass cut at different angles produce a rainbow effect, thats why you see purple blue or even violet colors on the street, but if you park and compare, you'll see color is similar but you'll see the "cut-off" line of the projector will have different colors.

Sounds like a good FAQ to me! Post it in the sticky.

http://www.intellexual.net/hid.htm A very good read about the misconceptions with the varying temps of HID's and aftermarket bulbs.

I got them at http://suvlights.tripod.com/suvlightscom/
Installaion was straightforward. Just like replacing halogen bulbs.
I took off the headlights and installed Phillips Ultinons.
