Top Speed

Whats up everybody. Thanks for your help so far. My 2000 Sterling Mist SE is running great and Maxima is the TRue DRIVERS CAR!! I just got one question. I have an automatic so what is the top speed and does it have a limiter on it? Is the se faster than the gxe or gle and by how much?

130 i believe. and 140's for manual.

tecman4 04-04-2003 09:40 AM

I was wondering this myself
Example: if your going 70 and your at 3000rpms then you have 3500rpms left and the car goes 500rpm every 10mph
I'll do some calcuations when I drive home and try to figure it out

If you are ever going to attempt to get there, I suggest you not skimp out on the fuel used...

Remember it well. While roads around here are posted 65 in places (and traffic moves faster than that) it is nothing like the old days of winding out my (then) '93 VTEC Prelude between Bonita Springs and Fort Myers on glass smooth highways with very sporadic highway patrol traffic!!

130mph

Y2K2Driver 04-04-2003 10:10 AM

I can say with absolute certainty that the 02 6spd will easily do 130. ;)

Axel 04-04-2003 10:52 AM

This has been asked many times. unfortunately, you can't search unless you're a donating member. There's been very long debates about this. Some say the 5-speed SE isn't speed limited, just drag limited and that the automatics are limited at like 130 and the 5-speed non SE are limited at 140. I remember some threads kept going back and forth with people saying they managed to get past 130 with an auto and others past 140 with a manual and others in the middle and every other possible combination. I don't think the debate was ever properly settled. I guess you'd need all the models and a nice oval track to be absolutely certain :)
For me, I was drag limited and I have a 2000 SE 5-speed.
I was drag limited around 140/142 (remember there's also a speedo error percentage at those speeds.)
I did see a picture of one guy who managed to get 156 mph on a 2002 SE 6-speed I think (he took a picture of his GPS device cause you can't trust the speedo).
Who knows really...

One a big empty road (I-75 in Florida)late at night my 2k2 6-speed has been known to hit 155.

SE...maybe over 205. I got up to 199 in my GLE, good thing I have those Z-rated tires. :o

quiet stretch of highway, just as I went from 999 to 1,000 miles I dropped to 5th and started accelerating... 139 and shut down with plenty left to go (2k2 6-speed)

That probably equates to about 145mph with speedo correction, which is about where the 2K2 SE drag limited.

Odd, everyone else reports soft speed limiters at 130 in all 5th gen autos.

I've got an 02' 6-speed. I was wondering if anyone knew the highest speed for each gear? I'm just curious as to how fast I can be going before I shift.

Why don't you just go to redline for each gear and check for yourself?

4th is 120
5th is 155 estimated
6th is 200 estimated

If you want to stretch out each gear then find your rev limiter which is a tru 6550 rpm. Don't trust the redline on the tach.

Nope - 130+ in my 2k3 SE too (and in the '95, but that's another story...)

There's been a lot of debate about this one - some of us have gone past 130, others say they are speed limited to 130 max (auto). Nissan told me that the cars are limited to the speed rating of the tires.

Don't know what the answer is - I checked the speedo in my car and it's off something like 0.4 mph at 100, so it's not speedo error. But some folks are adamant that they're limited...?

NismoSpeed113 04-05-2003 10:04 PM

top speed

I once raced a turbocharged civic and it kept up with me at 120mph (yes I was shocked too) so I bumped my car to 140mph, I was a lil in the red, so after he gave up tryin to catch up I slowed back down to 100...140mph so far...maybe more with more mods...

BlueStreak 04-06-2003 12:38 AM

my 2000 se hits a speed limiter right between 130 and 135. couple of other friends have said that they are limited in an area similar to this.

Re: Top Speed

~135mph

RichK 04-06-2003 06:58 AM

Hmmm...I have an 03 SE auto and I have never experienced this limiter. I have had the car to 135+ with no sense of a limiter. I would have gone faster if turn one wasn't coming up. BTW, I was on Pocono raceway.

gregorwise 04-06-2003 08:30 PM

Go on the highway an floor it and keep it floored until it wont go faster...Thats what I did in my car, and if a cop trys to chase you like they did me while your going 120+ just keep going and they wont catch you:ben:

134 auto and 143 manual 2k maximas

2kSeattleMax 04-09-2003 02:16 AM

I hit my 130-ish top end while pulling on a 98-2000 bimmer 3 series. My car was a GXE with 16" rims stock. Whatever your "Soft" rating is, will be dependant upon what your factory tires were/are.

There is a field in the Consult II to enter the tire rating which equates to the top end limit within the ECU.

I now live in Germany for the next 4 years and I brought my 2k SE 5Spd with me from Canada. Since I live in the land of Autobahns I will definitely find out my top speed. So far, I've hit 135+ (with room to go faster) on the way back from hockey but most of the time my wife is with me and won't let me drive faster than 120. With summer coming, I will have more opportunity to test the "max" of this "maxima".

Yeah... ok... dream on, buddy. And stay out of Illinois. We have two things here... one called the RADIO, the other called the HELICOPTER. You cannot, will not outrun a helicopter.

Well, prior to 9/11 there were barely any cops at the airport and it was a no-fly zone for helicopters...

Besides their top speed is only like 175mph...
