Eclipse's are pretty fast...who knew?

Don't know anything about Eclipse's, but ran into one today. Long story short, we were both in the outside lanes at a red light, with a car between us. At the light he moves out pretty fast, and I realize he's trying to come across all three lanes into mine. Being a fairly typical overly-competitive aggressive male (especially in the morning before coffee), I decide to let him have the lane...behind me. :D

Anyway, was surprised by the result. I was a second behind him in punching it, so had to play catch-up. But, expected to catch up easily, as a 2k3 tends to do with most cars. As it turns I pulled him pretty slowly (heard his tires chirp from 1st to 2nd, so he was trying hard :mardi: )

Don't know what flavor it was (red, new-ish, had a spoiler), but when I looked at Car-Stats it turns out some of the models run in the 6's 0-60.

Kudos to him - who knew?

How new is "newer"? If it was a '99 it had a turbo and quiet possibly had been tuned a little. I had a GSX (awd turbo) and it was pretty fast. It wouldn't have beaten my 2k2 6-speed in a fair race or from a stop, but if I was rolling and had the turbo spooled up, a 2k2/2k3 would have a hard time reeling it in.

Did it look like this?

Did you ever have the crank walk problem associated with that generation Eclipse?

Y2KSESteve Jun 6, 2003 11:27 AM

If it was a GSX or GS-T, those can be modded to hell and arent much fun if you dont know its coming.

I actually had a '93 and never had a problem (well, not true... blew out the whole rear-end tranny but it was the oil change people's fault, not mine, so they replaced it for me for free! :D).

Man I miss that car... :(. Had to get rid of it because we had a baby and the babyseat physically wouldn't fit in the back. When I tried opening the hatch the wife shut me down and said "time for a bigger car."

I picked '99 because he said 'newer.'

Quicksilver Jun 6, 2003 11:45 AM

Ahh, roger that! They are fun cars when modded...

skandalouz Jun 6, 2003 11:52 AM

the newer ones (most recent model)... are so pathetic... the gst's and the gsx's were pretty badass back in the day..

Cool to have pics to choose from :D

Didn't catch much detail unfortunately (paying attention to the road...) but the spoiler looked very much like the red one.

Had a similar run in, just dont expect to win against those GSTs that are making a lotta noise... A loud exhaust and blow off valve are like warning signs, meaning your *** is probably gonna be fried. :bill: Like poisonous animals with bright colored backs, beware!

MaxSE03 Jun 6, 2003 12:04 PM

Bet it was a 2k-2k3 GT since you started pulling on it slowly.

IceY2K1 Jun 6, 2003 12:04 PM

OMG!!! That's funny.

Anyway, ding ding ding... WE HAVE A WINNER! You chose the turbo version!

Even a totally stock GS-T would be hard to reel in if the turbo was spooled up. It made 210 hp and since he was rolling, and trying, and you gave him a jump, it would have taken a lot of effort to reel him in. You would have, but you would have needed more room.

Again, I miss that car. Stock it wasn't as fast as my 2k2 6-speed but it was much more a driver's car. And modding... don't get me going!

Sorry, didn't realize I would need to explain this carefully for you. I didn't get a good look at the car (wheels, lines, etc.) but I'd guess it was the same model as the red one in the picture, from my recollection of the rear roof line and the shape of the spoiler.

My bad...

Don't sweat it bud!

Based upon just the roof line and spoiler, noone could tell what year a Max was either.

maximamaybe Jun 6, 2003 12:24 PM

All of the 2Fast2Furious people know how fast they are.

Magellan Jun 6, 2003 12:26 PM

I'm sorry, I can't resist the urge to correct punctuation.

More than one Eclipse = Eclipses
Singular possessive case = Eclipse's (as in a particular Eclipse's tires)
Plural possessive case = Eclipses' (as in four Eclipses' tires.)

My bad - next time I'll try not to confuse anyone...

 I think it's hilarious all you noticed was the :chebosto: spoiler since it's so huge.

And yes I could tell ANY Eclipse simply by the rear. The tail-lights are a dead give away not to mention the 4ft. bumper on 95-99's.

What about more than one Maxima ?

MAXIMUS95GST Jun 6, 2003 03:24 PM

I have a 95GST modded, and my buddy that has a 2000GXE is always talking **** about his car being Faster. I laguh in his face and just ignore him, becuase i have had 2 bad experiences with cops in my last 3 years. But one day i seen him in the street and said what the heck, so we line up in the highway and i let him take off first and i take off behind him to show him what he's dealing with ;) . So i pass him flying at about 100mph and hes still trying i was laughing soo hard. I tell him at the toll booth, you want to run again because that was only 12 lbs. So i tell him now i will run you with 20lbs. He was like pull over man i want to check it out under the hood. He finally respects my eclipse. My mods are below:

16G turbo ported by yours Truly
RSR 3" SS exhaust
RSR 3" Downpipe
Super AFC
RC550CC injectors
Denso 190LPH fuel Pump
Apexi Intake
Nology Spark plug wires
Racin Hart C2's wrapped with Michellin Pilots(Bad Mofo tires)
Koni on all 4 corners with eibachs
ACT 2600 clutch

I have alot more **** but you get the idea :D, and now i bought a Maxima SE 2003 to enjoy the non shifting moments.

I almost bought a '97. I love that style and the handling was great with the AWD. However, the turbo lag was pretty bad stock and it felt like driving a regular 4 cyl with a boost only at 4,000 rpm.

I ended up getting a Ram Air Trans Am instead....talk about power

I don't care for the new styling of the Eclipse, and no AWD sucks :(

Depends on which end of the turbo you're at.:p

Same as for an Eclipse. BTW there should be no space between the word Maxima and your question mark.

Well...

Don't you know better than to end a sentence in a preposition?

i think plural maxima is like deer. it is still maxima. 2 maxima :-)

(note: that's the punchline of a joke!!! Don't take it personally, I just had to use the joke, it's not aimed at you!!!  )

the joke...
"Excuse me, where is the library at?"
"Here at Hahvahd, we never end a sentence with a preposition."
"O.K. Excuse me, where is the library at, a**hole?"

It is one of my favorites. My mother told it to me when I was about 8. It made a big impression on me. I've been careful about that rule ever since. Otherwise I slaughter the language but that one no. I'm kind of an English as a second language type. I was raised in West Texas... I never had a chance.

I think "maxima" is a plural of the word "maximum" therefore I don't think "maximas" is a real word. Although, what do I know... I've only been speaking english for 3 years.

No, not in this case. The name of the car is "maxima" so the plural is "maximas." If it was being used in the context of "most" then maxima would be the plural, but since maxima is a proper noun ("created" by nissan) you add an 's' to make the plural.

Thanks for the clarification Cliffie!

i think it is MAXIMI

SE7EN Jun 7, 2003 08:15 AM

I have a friend with GST and he upgrade the turbo and motor (piston, rod, and other parts in motor). HE crank up the boost up to 22 pound.. Dang it was freaking fast.. I like Eclipse but I dont like the new model because the designer of the car look crap!!

Hobert Jun 7, 2003 08:30 AM

My parents neighbor in Jacksonville has an eclipse with a bunch of work done and has the boost turned up to 20. It is very very quick. He is a pretty cool guy, except for the vinyl flames on his car. ;)
