My 2k2 auto vs WRX manual last night (the best race i've had)

Finally learned how to launch my car. First time I raced my buddy's WRX was couple of months ago and he had me by 2 cars second time he also had me by 2 cars, that was because everytime I break torqued my car to about 2k and then stepped on the gas pedal too hard and my tires would spin till about 4-5k. Last night we lign up again and this time I took off like never before. Minimal tire spin, and I had him by 1/2 a car off the line we shut it down at 100 and I was 1 1/2 cars ahead of him. Then we catch another light and again I have a great launch, we again shut it down at 100 and I had him by a car. I could not believe that my max pulled on his WRX. BTW all I have is Franken intake, he has a full cat back exhaust I am auto and he is manual.:D

Good job. That gives all of us with autos some credibility around here.

Untill yesterday I did not realize how fast my max really is. Now that I beat my buddy's WRX I am a lot more confident now.
Next week I will race my sisters's boyfriends S2000 manual. I wanted to do it this week but he just bought it and has to get used to driving the car. I test drove that car and it does not seem that fast untill u hit like 6500 RPMs, then it almost feels like a turbo is kicking in. I will post the results next week.:D

I had a similar experience on Sat. night , didnt post it cause
there are many non-believers up in here- but yeah, coming out of
a gas station at about 11pm I took him down to the next set of lights Rt.202 and that car was screaming off the line, didnt sound
stock(the kid was a ricer) But most likely he didnt expect the launch I had on my 6speed and then slowly started to gain within a car length- but my franken was screamin on 3rd gear bout 5500, when i slapped 4th he was about 3/4 car lenght behind me -then he slowed
down and got off a side street- he probably didn't know how to push that thing- I know they are very fast my cousins boyfriend has
an old style impreza wrx and he runs low thirteens at englishtown
with few mods- But I dont encourage street racing- insurance points are hard to shake off!!

9 out of 10 races are determined by the driver- as long as they
are close performers of course

I am a bit sceptical. WRX dude doesn't know how to drive his car. Try to get it on from the roll on the hwy and let us know.

I can take him on the high way when we were going 55 i manually shifted to 2nd and took him every time. Its only when u r in D and your car only shifts to 3rd when the WRX pulls because the max is running on low RPM's then.
I was skeptical too about org members winning against WRX's untill yesterday. Like I said he beat me twice before, and ge got owned last night, he could not believe either.:D Dont underestimate 2k2 autos ;)

I beat about 3 WRXs from a roll. They SUCK from a roll. I am also a 6spd but still..the AWD advantage is GONE from a roll....

:sprint: The AWD cars loose a lot of power on top end its a big disadvantage.

Tell that to my friend new evo... 155 is top speed i believe..

slickrick Jun 26, 2003 08:27 PM

i raced a wrx 4 times. 2 from a roll, one from a stop, and 1 from a 5mph roll. from the highway roll i won once, he won once. from 5mph he took me the worst. i should have manually shifted. and from a stop he beat me to 60 but i was gaining on him. its a drivers race. but if you have a choice race from a 50 mph roll in an auto 2k2 max.

UCF_94lude Jun 26, 2003 08:28 PM

I raced my friends 2000-2001 4 door accord. Think its got like 225 hp. Anyways, we were turning left, he had the inside lane. I didn't know he was going to gun it so after I saw he was racing I stomped the gas. Unfortunetely there was a lot of loose dirt and I didn't have good traction. Anyways, after I hit the straight away and hit the middle of 3rd gear, I flew past him like he wansn't even moving. In fact, I thought he had shut it down, but he said he had it on the floor the whole time.

tdhillon Jun 26, 2003 08:35 PM

i haven't raced a wrx yet, but it would be interesting. i beat a mustang gtr from stop, the other day on the way to work. first time i actually pushed my car, hit about 130mph untill he backed off. just got it a month ago

Good race! I've pulled a WRX from a roll, but haven't yet tried one from a stop. Like you said, against that thing a good launch is absolutely required.

wait so let me get this straight, every time i launch my auto i....
1) hold the brake down at the same time my foot is on the gas
2) i am stepping on the gas as far as i can go(car starts to lift up)
3)as soon as i go i let go of the brake and slam the gas the rest of the way

now i know their is something wrong i am doing in those 3 steps because i spin 1st gear like crazy, i their another launch technique i could use to prevent that????

looslip Jun 26, 2003 10:50 PM

I've got a 2k3 auto and I've beat my homey's 2k3 WRX 5spd from a stop 2 times to a 200 - 300 meter dash both times. He just got the car 2 months ago so I don't think he can drive it all that well yet.:D

02SEinStL Jun 26, 2003 10:56 PM

Good race...I test drove a couple WRXs, too, before I bought my '02 SE. I knew I wanted this car to be auto since I already have a couple of sticks, and an auto WRX seemed like a stupid thing to do - but they do make them for some reason!
Anyway, I only drove 5-spd. WRX wagons and I was pretty impressed with them...like the S2000, they aren't much down low, but once boost hits you are planted in your seat BUT GOOD:cool: . The thing is, when the mags post those wicked 0-60 times of like 5.2 sec., it's done by totally thrashing the car. A lot of people you might line up against are not gonna want to beat on their $25k car like that, and they end up with low 7's...then here you come in your high 6's Max and well obviously you know what can happen:D

2001SE Jun 26, 2003 11:03 PM

auto maximas are about low to mid 6's and 6sp can even do high 5's

D'Oh !!
Well then, no wonder mine feels so quick :D ...and there's no doubt the advantage goes to the one with the displacement/low end torque when going from a dead stop (unless there's a serious traction problem that is), so I have no trouble buying these Subie stories

driving in Btown couple weeks ago i was keeping up wit a wrx for a good length until i had to take an exit. im stock too. neva tried yet from a stop. im sure if i get a good launch in and when my ypipe, intake, and midpipe com in itl b a little easier :D

Y2KMaxGXE-R Jun 27, 2003 07:44 AM

I am a 2k 5spd and tried to play with a WRX on hwy at 60-70mph from 5th gear. WRX gunned it. I downshifted but the hwy divided before I could say wazzup. I'd love to go against a WRX.

Me, but I'm not an auto. ;) And I take them from a roll and from a stop, doesn't matter...

I'm willing to bet it wasn't a STi WRX that you went up against. While it is hard to believe a 3.0 Max would beat a WRX (unless the driver didn't know what they were doing), there is NO WAY a Maxima can keep up with the STi with its 4.6 sec 0-60 time and 13.2-sec 1/4-mile time.

wantasupra3 Jun 27, 2003 10:19 AM

The WRX has a really crappy stock cluch for launching the car. That could be a good reason you kept up with it off the line. IF you get to race one with a aftermarket cluch/flywheel from i dig there is not hope. I have seen WRXs kill cobras and SSs off the line with a really good driver. The WRXs also tend to loose their breathe in third gear, which would help you gain some ground.

Good kill:D

Yes, you said that you finnally found out how to get a good launch. What did you differently? What is the best way for an auto 2k2 to launch off the line? Just wondering.

Where did you get those times?????? I have seen 5 second flat.. consisently in many mags, but neva seen it at 4.6's.... You have to be in third by the time you hit 60. Must have been a GREAT GREAT driver...

The best launching mthod that worked for me is: Hold the brak with your left foot and get your RPMs to somewhere between 1500-1700. Then when its time to go, release the break pedal but dont press the gas yet let your car roll forward a little, then press it half way ( you should experience little spin of tires but just enough for your car to pull forward), then when u feel your car gripped the road floor it, and off you go, mess around with it to get the feel of it, it took me few tries before I got the hang of it.:D

02SEinStL Jun 27, 2003 01:45 PM

A regular WRX- which are still sick- I know better not to fock with an STI- I aint beat! You can hear the diff between a riced out WRX and a stock one- just how your intake sounds diff from stock-
Anyway , like my man 02inStlou says- half
these ricers are soft and cannot push their cars like the pros do when road testing for a mag-

Oh I know - TC is the first button I hit when driving the wife's GT Cruiser. I read where my '02 has TC standard, but I can bake em off pretty well and plus I don't see a defeat button anywhere - so do I have it or not? I'm thinkin not...

Hey like I said he beat me the first two times, then I beat him twice couple of days ago. If you get a real good launch like I did that night, you have a real good chance of beating WRX, it wasnt by much, but I still did it twice.:D
BTW he is my friend so I talked to him after and he said that he took off pretty good and he was impressed with my max. I dont want to get to cocky now because the next WRX that I race might smoke my a$$, all depends on my launch:cool:
