HELP!!! I'm stranded... very Urgent!!

I think the Frankencar just bit me in the ***! I was pulling out in to traffic at lunch under heavy acceleration and she died! Poof! Luckily I had the momentum to cost in to a parking lot. I could crank it for a few seconds then it sputters & quits.

I'm almost positive its the MAF, especially after reading some other posts. I read a post with identical symptoms from the first of this month on a 2k2 (or 2k3). My car is a 2000. I saw where Dave Burnette has replacements so you don't have to buy the whole thing but the part # I saw was #22680-AM600 for the 3.5. Does anyone have a part # for the 3.0? Cost ideas?

Also can I disconnect the MAF long enough to get it home tonight w/out screwing anything up or do I need to get it towed? I'm sorry I'm rambling but this is tearing me up... especially when I saw these things could cost $500!!

Please help. Thanks Gang!

did you make sure the tube is still conected? i have the stillen and the tube poped out. the maf sensed the problem and it died. i just had to put it back in.

Yeah, its still on tight.

Engine won't run without signal from the MAF. It regulates air/fuel ratio. Sorry man terrible luck.

I got the idea from an earlier post. Like I said his was newer than mine.

Pir8 97 Jul 10, 2003 12:38 PM

No ideas on the part #? Any alternative to calling a tow truck other than leaving it there or pushing it the 4-5 miles to my house?

jttaylor155 Jul 10, 2003 12:42 PM

i would just leave it there, go buy the maf, and go back and put it in. they are easy to replace.

serin Jul 10, 2003 01:05 PM

did you try degreaser on the sensor? some users have had success with that. just disconnect the battery, remove the maf, then spray some degreaser into the tube and let it run onto the sensor. rinse, dry as best you can, and reconnect everything. if it's the filter oil causing this, this simple fix should do it.

chinaonnitrous1 Jul 10, 2003 01:41 PM

unplug maf....drive home. im on maf #5 due to some stupid 2k2 crap. I have a 2k1 MAF..but you hafta send me a 2k2 one..and i'll pay you 20 bucks. Im running a 2k1 maf right now, but i need to replace it with a 2k2 maf so i can go to the dealer for my TSB. So bascially i'll pay you to swap MAF's with me.

I'll give that a shot... it certainly makes sense. I ordered a new MAF from DAVEB a little while ago ($106 for part & overnight shipping :) ). If the degreaser works I'll just set the new one aside for another day. Thanks!

I got the friend discount on towing... $30 delivered to my door. It was sad watching my baby being picked up and hauled off :bawling:

My car's a 2000 so I can't help ya with the 2k2 maf. Sorry

Thanks for the advice.

chinaonnitrous1 Jul 10, 2003 02:01 PM

ooohhh *slaps head*. I had already ordered the new one by the time I read your post. Besides, the 2k2 maf is like $390 or so... way more than my $89 2k maf. ;)

As soon as I read this post I picked up the phone and called DaveB
and ordered new MAF for under $90 shipped- I cannot wait till it happens to me- I got high bloodpressure in my family-i'll flip
If it happens on a long road trip-now i'll keep my stock MAF in the
car just in case

chinaonnitrous1 Jul 10, 2003 03:05 PM

hahaha nuts...actuall 2k2 maf same price ;-) oh well... good luck!

How come people keep talking about failing MAF sensors? I have never had that problem before. So far, my only problems with this car are a fixed suspension problem, and the notorious paint. So am I lucky or is it still going to happen?

Ddamn, not the answer I was looking for, but at least I'll know what to expect.

Pir8 97 Jul 10, 2003 04:06 PM

*sigh* I stepped out of my buddy's car after work and my hot neighbor was walking out... no sooner do I put my feet on the pavement when I hear, "What happened to your car." All I could say was, "I broke it." No one to blame but myself for putting that aftermarket intake on.

Ah well. Probably should have bought 2 mafs cause I haven't learned my lesson yet. I'm keeping the new intake. :)

Craig2kGLE Jul 10, 2003 07:10 PM

No offense to anyone intended, but I don't get it. I've been reading about these failures for over a year on this board, and still see people spending $$ on intakes. I'll sacrifice the 5-10 hp and know I'm going to get home.

If you have a spare part in the trunk of your $25k car because you know it will probably break down, you might want to get a tuner car to screw with on the weekend.

Flame away! :D

I found myself asking that same question yesterday :). Just hardheaded I guess.

Pir8 97 Jul 11, 2003 07:46 AM

Follow up...

DAVEB is the man!! I ordered the new MAF from him a little before 4:00PM yesterday and it arrived before 9:30 this morning. Great service! Thanks Dave. :D

Very true, I mean I don't know much a bout stuffs under the hood but after reading lots of threads about MAF (with an intake) failure, probably just for the 5th gen. I am too afraid to put it on.

Just out of curiosity, what really caused the failure of the MAF, vibration or oil coming from the cone or both? Do people with GAB/PAB have any problems so far?

acMAX Jul 11, 2003 03:02 PM

i got the frankencar and have never had a MAF problem....ever

go figure....

serin Jul 13, 2003 10:16 AM

me too, with three different setups to boot. :gotme:

Mine is a 2k.

Question to guys using a brace... its supposed to attach to the strut tower, right? If this is the case is seems like it would jerk the MAF around when the enige torques. Any thoughts on this?
