Installed new plugs, car won't run, help?

Damn, installed new NGK plugs, gapped to .043, took 'em in and out twice to make sure. Idles rough, won't run when cold, shifts like crap, no wires loose, nothing out of place. Anybody have any suggestions? Sounds like a vaccum leak but I can't find anything.

what was the part number on the plugs? Did you take apart anything to get to the plugs? Are all ignition coils hooked up correctly?

danz300 Sep 29, 2003 11:39 AM

Plugs were PFRG5-11, same as came out. All ignition ciols back in the same spot and hooked up. Also did throttle body cleaning at the same time so yes I had the air box out, unpluged MAS and reconnected, took off the three vaccum lines from the air box and reinstalled. Did all this twice in 2 days.

Is it possible you hooked up the coil wiring incorrectly? This would cause the engine to run rough or not at all due to the cylinders firing out of order.
Has the ECU thrown a code?
How did you do bank 1 without taking more apart, i.e. the intake manifold?

I did have to remove the cover on the front 3 plugs, the rears I did without removing anything. Wires seemed to only go to one spot, besides, I did one at a time.

Bad plug perhaps? :gotme: Put the old ones back in and see how it runs.

Did you have to move anything on the rear bank to gain access to the coils? On our 4th gens we need to move the idle air control valve. Maybe something is disconnected back there.

Is your check engine light on?

you shouldnt need to disconnect anything on a 2k or 2k1 to remove the rear bank coils and plugs. you didnt happen to spray the maf with intake cleaner did you? im guessing it has to do with removing the maf or perhaps a clamp on the airbox isnt tight. i cleaned my maf with electronic parts cleaner and some did it with intake cleaner with no problems but if you soaked it, then it could have shorted out.

I'd guess that you had a flaky MAF that was on it's way out... your moving it around when doing the throttle body cleaning killed it...

danz300 Sep 29, 2003 12:17 PM

No SES light, MAS was on the bench while I cleaned the throttle body. Had a rag stuffed in there to soak it up. And bad plug idea is good one, I did rescue the old ones from the trash last night.

is the MAF hooked up the right way? I've seen it cause similar symptoms if connected backwards against the airflow.... hehehe... sounds stupid, but I've seen it before :wall:

Damn who you know nauman that hooked it up backwards? That plug takes alot of pressure to jam it in the wrong way.

it was on a 4th gen... but yeah, it would be hard to do on the 5th gen... but who knows? :goofy: was worth a guess

Disconnect one coil at a time. Notice if the engine operates worse than it had. If not, start at that plug.
